Today we’d like to introduce you to Jermiah Miller.
Jermiah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I received my first digital camera in 9th grade as a Christmas gift. It came with a printer for instant pictures, I was so in love. I would take pictures of friends and family and gift the prints as gifts as well as make photo albums and scrapbooks. I loved photography, but just seen it as a hobby. During High School, I took a Film Photography Class in 10th/11th grade, I was able to shift gears and learn more about film, developing in dark room, and manual settings of a camera. In 2006 (age 16), I received my first opportunity to work at RITE AID, where I was positioned in the Photo Department. I was so ecstatic, being able to use my skills from school for my first job. I continued to work throughout High School, missing out on a lot of activities due to my work schedule. In 2008 I Graduated Westchester High School, becoming a mother at a young age. I was accepted to CSUN, but the day I was scheduled to take my placement test I decided not to go, because I didn’t know how I would be able to excel being pregnant. Meanwhile, I continued to work and checked in to Community College in hopes to become a Probation Officer, although I didn’t have any passion in the Criminal field I have a family background in such. I think I fell into the image society/family has over our youth to go to college and find a career, not giving the chance to follow your Dreams or become an Entrepreneur. I was in and out school trying to juggle being a young mother, school, and work. At some point I stopped going to school and my main focus was just work to provide for my family. My gain of experience increased from photo department, cashier, ice cream department, pharmacy, and finally moving up to management. Throughout my years with this company I knew I needed to make a move to do something I loved, all I knew is that I didn’t want to work retail the rest of my life and the criminal field was not an option anymore. I spent 9 years with this company, my first and last job, gaining a strong work ethic, great customer service and management skills.
In February 2015, I decided to take a leap out on Faith and Resigned to focus on my Photography as my business. It was so random and some of my family/friends thought I was crazy and out of my character to make such drastic change. I started photographing events, shooting from my little living room to my mom’s garage trying to build a portfolio and gain Clientele. Constantly sending out emails daily replying to ads to not get at least 1 response. I started to think something was wrong with my computer or email address. I was definitely determined and remained consistent. My goal was to open up a Photo Studio to provide a professional setting to future clients.
In February 2017, I opened up my studio, in which is known by Miahs Photography. From overlooked to Overbooked is a blessing, thanking God for giving me the strength & vision to continue my entrepreneur journey.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely Not! I think having struggles throughout any journey is what makes you. The struggle is like a test of how bad you want to succeed. One of the Struggles I faced was going from a guaranteed paycheck to not knowing when I will get paid again.
