Meet Jennifer Van of Camarillo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Van

Hi Jennifer, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Since our last conversation about a year ago, quite a lot has unfolded in my journey. I proudly graduated from California Institute of the Arts in May 2024 with an MFA in Photography and Media. Currently, I have the privilege of teaching Art Appreciation at Modesto Junior College, my alma mater. This role has been particularly rewarding, as I find great fulfillment in fostering and supporting the next generation of artists.

In addition to teaching, I am still the Director of Strata Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to uplifting emerging artists. This position allows me to combine my passion for curation with my commitment to creating opportunities for underrepresented voices in the arts.

Meanwhile, I continue to develop my own art practice and am thrilled to have an upcoming solo exhibition scheduled in Houston, Texas, in October 2025. It’s an exciting time in my career, and I’m eager to see how these experiences continue to shape my professional and creative path.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Graduating from graduate school this past May felt a bit like jumping off a cliff—not knowing exactly where I’d land. It’s a feeling I think many graduate students experience. In those moments of uncertainty, I’ve realized how important it is to trust yourself and stay focused on your goals and passions. That belief has been what keeps me moving forward.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My most recent body of work, Reclamation, delves into the intricate interplay of time, memory, evolution, preservation, and care. Each artwork unfolds as a contemplative journey, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in a deep reflection on the essence of being, the inevitability of change, and the significance of nurturing both self and surroundings. Through images of nature, I invite viewers to contemplate existence and the unique beauty inherent in each moment. It is important to take one day at a time.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I am very grateful for my friends, family, and mentors who have continued to support me along the way.
