Meet Jennifer Nnamani of Beau Monde Society

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Nnamani.

Jennifer, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a Nigerian born/NYC based creative. I moved to the States in 2000 with my family following the tense aftermath from the military rule to the Democratic government in Nigeria. Shortly after, my family went through the egregious lows of the dormant U.S. immigration system. That didn’t stop me from pursuing my dreams of getting an American education despite the circumstances and roadblocks I found along the way.

With no possibility of getting a job due to lack of working visa status, I freelanced as a stylist and an assistant for two years. Then came DACA in 2012. This gave me the opportunity to not only work for the first time but to launch my company a year later.

I am a multi-hyphenated creative; event producer, curator, creative director, storyteller, casting director and stylist. What sets me apart is my love of Africa and putting our stories out there. I’ve been dedicated to this since 2011.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it hasn’t. A few struggles. Challenges create opportunities. As a black woman and an immigrant, it is harder to get the grants and often, support that I need. In the words of Dr. Maya Angelou, “Still, I rise.”

Beau Monde Society – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Beau Monde Society (BMS) is an eco-focused creative agency specializing in production, editorials, and creative direction (and more)! At the heart of BMS is our annual eco-collective, Fashion Envie, a fashion and art platform dedicated to highlighting POC in the sustainable space. The platform has celebrated over nine annual curated showcases between New York City and Los Angeles. As a company, we have being featured in 50 countries and counting and working with other multifaceted creatives.

In addition, BMS supports women designers from Nigeria, Cameroon, Japan, and United States. My mission is to make fashion F.U.N by bridging the gap between the importance of sustainability and ethical responsibility with a dash of afrofuturism to celebrate my African roots.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success means two things to me–finding joy along the journey or being happy in discovering my life’s purpose. The second is self-actualization–the continuous pursuit of knowledge, inspiration, and creativity.
