Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Galvan.
Hi Jennifer, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When taking Psychology 101 in my undergraduate college, I was surprised to see how the topics of discussion were all things I thought about all the time. Why do people do what they do? What goes through their mind when they decide to do that? Why do others choose to behave differently? These are just some of the questions my curious mind would wander through. This led to me pursuing my undergraduate degree in psychology and then pursuing my Masters degree and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology a few years later. After graduation, I took another two year course where I obtained advanced training and gained a certificate in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. I worked in many diverse settings while practicing psychology including clinics, inpatient hospitals and health care facilities before settling into my own private practice. After recognizing how much need there was for therapy services, I decided to expand my practice to a group practice in order to create a more collaborative environment for therapists and provide more services to those in need. Currently, my group practice is located in Calabasas, CA where our team conducts in person and telehealth therapy.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every road has its challenges and mine is no different. I have experienced challenges when working with the severely mentally ill in psychiatric hospitals, while working with very young children and hearing their heartbreaking stories and when working with someone over a long period of time and seeing hardships they’re experiencing. Working as a psychologist is a very emotionally intimate experience that requires authentic connection and empathy, therefore the mental health of those I work with impacts me as well.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
-We do in-person and telehealth therapy sessions.
-We have a diverse group of therapists that allows us to reach a large variety of ethnicities, religions, cultures and more.
-We are known to take a more psychoanalytic approach, which is seen less and less nowadays in the therapy world.
-We are proud that we are a group of therapists who really cares and connects with our clients. We take the time to build intimate relationships and put effort in sustaining them.
-We are collaborative
-We see individuals, adolescents, families and couples.
-We take insurance and out of pocket reimbursement.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My authentic passion for the work. I can truly say I love my career and wouldn’t want to do anything differently.
My care and connection to my clients.
My ability to do my own inner work to minimize my own personal blockages and struggles (first hand experience/understanding/empathy/compassion).
