Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Lu.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Like a lot of kids, I grew up playing the violin. I got pretty good at it, but I knew early on that what I really loved was learning other instruments, too, which is how I ended up picking up 5 more: viola, cello, double bass, piano, and trombone.
In 2025, an old friend from high school reached out to me asking if I could play for her wedding. Having decided against going to school for music, it would be my first time performing solo in years, and the first time I’d get paid to play my instrument. But it ended up being a lot of fun, and not wanting to let my musical training go to waste, I wanted to see where I could take it from there. Now, I am thankful to say that I’m not only still making music, but doing so in a way that celebrates some of the most important moments in people’s lives.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Because LA is so full of creatives, the music scene can be pretty competitive. Especially with the wedding industry being unregulated, there is a lot of competition out there. I’ve found that talent is only a tiny fraction of what makes a musician successful in this industry—it’s more about knowing how to market and build a reputation for yourself. In today’s gig economy, a large part of that is social media. Although I work at a marketing firm as my day job, I am pretty helpless when it comes to social media, so this has been a continual point of growth for me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What I pride myself in most is never sticking to one thing, musically. Being a multi-instrumentalist for so long has given me to some amazing opportunities I wouldn’t have had otherwise, like going from touring Costa Rica with a symphony orchestra to performing for the president of Taiwan with a marching band.
As a wedding and events musician, I think that this range of experiences makes a difference. I do most of my performances on viola, my personal favorite instrument. (If you haven’t heard of it: it’s like if a violin and a cello had a baby.) In a sea of violinists, it’s one small way I’m able to set myself apart by offering an alternative to the instruments that people are more used to seeing at these events.
What matters most to you?
As a former event planner, my number one priority is elevating whatever wedding or event I’m playing for. We’ve all seen the difference between an event that goes well and one that goes poorly, and I see it as my responsibility to do everything in my power to ensure a smooth experience for my clients and guests alike.
