Meet Jarret Liotta of West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jarret Liotta.

Jarret, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Despite my deep love of film since childhood, the idea of creating movies seemed an impossibility. Instead, focused my writing interests on journalism. This ultimately led me to a documentary project, which opened my eyes to the accessible world of digital creation. At this time I learned to edit on Avid, to shoot video, and ultimately to recognize that you don’t need a million dollars to create a film — you need a vision, commitment, time and detailed planning … I still continue to work as a journalist, often as a photojournalist, which only augments my film making interest and ability. And while professionally I’m a jack of all trades, my creative heart and soul is as a writer-director of narrative film …

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Making movies is a struggle of daily details, but there’s also the overarching existential struggles that every artist faces. Completing a film is monumental, but rebounding from that all-consuming effort is formidable. The trick, as in life, is to keep showing up.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I like to think my film work and the creative writing around which it’s based is simultaneously intelligent, identifiable, honest and most importantly funny. I hope it gives people something — makes them feel just a little better, a little happier. If it offers ideas or new ways of seeing things, that’s great, but more importantly if helps the audience feel a little bit better — perhaps feel less alone, or not as apart from other people — than that’s monumental and awesome!

What matters most to you?
My kids, hands down, and maybe my cat next … Philosophically, I deeply value the truth — honesty, the opposite of trying to massage a message to manipulate a response or belief … I detest lies and especially lies that are presented as truth, that try to target outcomes. I really value exposing lies, exposing manipulation and untruth, especially in the human conditions … I think if everyone told the truth and lived their real deep truth without consequences, we’d be a happy planet.
