Meet Janice Hollins of Mama Cinch in Northridge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janice Hollins.

Janice, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Mama Cinch after having four kids. I was addicted to buying yoga pants, they’re convenient, comfortable, and they make you aware of your body- in some cases aware in a negative, self-conscious type of way. After buying literally almost a hundred pairs, I decided to design some that address the physical make-up of a woman… especially women who’ve had children. My husband was a former professional athlete (NBA veteran of ten years), he was very helpful in suggesting material that absorbed sweat, was comfortable against the skin, compressed the right areas, yet flexible. My pants have several unique features: an extra high waist (2 inches above the regular high waisted yoga pant) that provides compression and back support.

There are silicone adhesives located in the back of the pants placed strategically under the glutes (to smooth, lift, and contour). Last but not least, the butt area of the pants are made with a flexible/stretchy fit allowing it pop (unlike other compression tights that flatten your bum). When I received my samples I knew I had made something special that was going to make women feel confident and beautiful! I wanted to make my pants affordable: say goodbye to the 100 dollar price tag, our pants a quality with reasonable pricing 28.00- 37.97. Today, Mama Cinch can be purchased on Amazon (where they have a 4-star rating) and on the Mama Cinch Website: www.mamacinch.com Mama Cinch has been worn by Emmy award-winning actress, Niecy Nash and celebrity stylist/Designer Olori Swank.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The journey was definitely a challenge. Again, being a mother of four my personal time is always so limited between my kid’s schedules and my husband constantly traveling for work (retired NBA veteran turned Espn Sports Analyst). My husband and I were both transitioning into new careers, me being a full-time stay at home mom for the last ten years and him taking a huge pay cut, we wanted to approach Mama Cinch cautiously (financially) yet confidently, we knew it would be a potential bestseller (amongst yoga pants) once women knew what the pants did!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Mama Cinch is a premium brand of yoga pants, designed for all women, but made with mamas in mind! We pride ourselves on addressing the unique and complex fit of women’s bodies (designed by a woman). Our company has a unique design that addresses all the typical problematic areas of the woman anatomy (tummies, buttocks, cellulite, etc). I’m proud of my company for inspiring women to feel their best and walking in confidence!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is not defined by material, but the mark you leave on this world, how you make people feel. I want my kids to have a sense of others, to be giving and kind. I’m a firm believer in: you can have everything, and yet have nothing at all. A spiritual mentor once told me to invest in people, not things, for human relationships yield the highest return!
