Meet James Cowan

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Cowan.

James, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up here in Los Angeles where the allure of the Entertainment Industry is part of daily culture. When I was young, I enjoyed to make and inhabit stories, but it wasn’t till High School that I accepted that I was going to spend my life in the pursuit of art. In 2009, I went to California Institute of the Arts (Cal Arts) where I expanded my studies and met many artists who I continue to work with today.

We are lucky enough to live in an era where there are opportunities in a variety of genres, from immersive to physical theater, from procenium to VR and AR, and of course film and television. I believe it’s important to be active in all these communities, they lend to and enhance one another.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, I don’t think it’s ever a smooth road. Life and art are tied together, locked with one another, and just as life is never static neither is art. As people we experience joy and heartbreak, confidence and doubt. I believe that allowing the experience to be and tempering your reaction to a situation dictates the means by which you grow.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am an actor. I do what anybody else does. Day in day out I balance what I need to do to survive and what I do to thrive. For me, that means working in a way where I can sustain myself. I think the most important thing that sets anybody out from a crowd is precision and consistency. Precision comes from research, from knowing your expertise better than anyone else. Consistency comes from practice. Everything takes practice. It doesn’t matter if you are managing employees, engineering skyscrapers, or touring with the National Opera. And that’s what ends up making the difference.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I believe that success comes from being able to find what makes us great in each situation we encounter. Doubt is always going to try and find away into the work that we are doing. In the times that we align ourselves with confidence and belief in our actions we are successful, and in the times we doubt ourselves and our actions we inhibit our willingness to create. The more consistence we bring to believe ourselves the more momentum we build, and there are greater successes we can achieve.
