Meet James Colla of Beachwood Canyon

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Colla.

Hi James, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Yes absolutely! Like a lot of younger musicians in high school I was in a band with my friends which eventually translated into some touring and getting some fun music experience. Afterwards, something about producing always just looked so fun to me and so I ended up buying some equipment with one of my best friends and thats where it started. A couple years in turned into moving to LA, in which I was still definitely learning, and slowly over the years progressed and worked/continue to work with a bunch of cool people which has allowed me to be a full time producer which was always a dream of mine and something I certainly don’t ever want to take for granted.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
You know it hasnt been the smoothest but it’s definitely been one of the most fun. Every year I seem to think that I’m finally where I want to be, but then the next year I’m like damn no no this is the best year. So constant progression but there were definitely struggles between balancing other jobs when you’re still working on becoming good at production, mixed with of course the pandemic right in the middle, which we all dealt with. But really most of the time I was lucky enough to have great writers and artists as friends that were at the same level as me so we were able to come up and learn together

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a music producer! I work mostly in pop, but you know, theres a bunch of styles, between indie pop or more synth pop or alt pop, trap pop, hyperpop, but I love working in all areas of that. I don’t know about what I’m most known for, but I have the most fun doing chill indie synth tracks, but some of my bigger releases (Ex: Someday Faraway – Labit) that have topped 10 million+ streams are more guitar based vibey tracks which are still so fun. Honestly I think my rhythms are what sets me apart, when I get free roam to do the drums exactly how I want I have so much fun.

How do you define success?
I would say without overthinking it the first thing that comes to my mind is constant progress. Like if you can look back every year and see you’ve gotten better.

Pricing:

  • I say just shoot me a DM or email! As most people in our industry know, producers are always willing to work with budgets as best we can. (Ex.: you have less budget but are will to give a higher percentage of royalty temporarily, or if you wanted more than one song done we always can adjust!) I never want to turn down a good song just because of a budget issue
