Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Johnson.
Robert, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was not happy with my life. I often would fall into depression and just wasn’t a very optimistic person. I got laid off my job late 2008 it was actually 3days before Christmas. Things just got worse. I finally got tired of it. I remembered my high school photo teacher Mr. Reid said “Robert please never stop taking pictures. You have a talent I want you to hone your skills and see you accomplish your goal and live out your dreams”. So I did just that I went to Samy’s camera in Culver City bought a camera and started putting foot to pavement. I just kept at it. I kind of started do what everyone else was doing, just to make some money. Shortly after I was unhappy shooting glamor and things I didn’t feel happened in real life. I mean setting up shoots and being creative is one thing. But I wanted to capture more I wanted true form, raw expression. I wanted to be like the greats, Gordon parks, sir Adams, cliff watts, Greg Gorman. So I did the best I could every time. Every shutter actuation meant something different for me. Art is art is art. No one person shoots the same no one artist paints the same. You can judge art you can only admire it. So I did what I wanted to do and took it where I wanted to take it. And I’m still going to do as I please with my camera and my vision
Has it been a smooth road?
Haha life hasn’t been any crystal stair. In the beginning, you have nothing. No name, no references, nothing. So that made things real hard and discouraging a lot of the time. I didn’t have anyone to help me with the industry rules, secrets and what not.
What role has luck had in your life and career?
Luck is, in my opinion, a state of mind. Over the years I relied on luck and skill both. But now I command the things I desire from the universe. And sometimes it works out in my favor and sometimes it doesn’t. But it’s never a negative outcome due to the forever changing always positive outlook I have on life.
Do you feel like there are certain traits that increase the likelihood of success?
Consistency 100% always and forever. Also, know your market.
What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
Melting pot of nationalities. I dislike the fact that housing is continuing to climb at a faster rate than higher paying common jobs. Sucks that the less fortunate but talented have to work shitty jobs longer to trudge up the ladder of success. Like myself. lol
