Today we’d like to introduce you to Hugh Harper.
Hugh, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I initially started posting food photos on my personal Facebook account because I wanted to show everyone what I was eating. I was always a source when people needed suggestions of some cool hole in the wall spot or a fancy restaurant for an evening out.
I eventually decided to start using Instagram as my platform of choice since it is photo driven as opposed to Facebook where there are not only photos but articles, reactions, check-ins, and games. I kept posting the food I was eating on Instagram and slowly built a following.
Eventually, restaurant owners reached out, and I was invited to various food events. This not only helped me get more pictures of food but also introduced me to a network of chefs, business owners and other influencers who have now become my friends.
I have continued on this path of showing food throughout Los Angeles and incorporated showcasing food from my travels around the world. I like to experience other cultures through their food regardless if I’m eating in Los Angeles or traveling overseas. It is my goal to continue highlighting different places and making everyone hungry with my photos!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
An obstacle I face is balancing my food blog activities with my full-time job, which keeps me extremely busy. My food blog has basically turned into a part-time job with the time needed for daily postings, editing, gathering content (pictures and videos) and attending events.
Unfortunately, when I want to do any food-related activities, I have to do it either after work or on the weekends. It has been tough because I don’t have a lot of free time to spare. However, meeting other food influencers have made it so much more fun when we go out together to get content or attend events.
Even though my free time is limited, I am thankful for these people because I get to have amazing experiences with all these awesome people.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
As a food influencer, I help with the marketing of food establishments ranging from restaurants to hole in the wall spots. This can be anything such as promoting a grand opening, a new menu item, a new location, a special promotion, etc. I am very proud to help any establishment regardless if it’s a national chain or if it’s a family owned business.
I think that my style and aesthetics sets me apart from other food accounts. I enjoy food styling and setting up shots in a way that are organized (I’m OCD), intriguing and appealing to people. My shots vary with one or two food items, a tray with a lot of food or a table with a ton of food on it! Regardless of the setup, I want everyone to be hungry for the food in my photos!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I have many proud moments in my food blog career. By far, the proudest moments are being able to share my food journey with all of my followers, helping my followers find awesome food either in LA or around the world and helping businesses get the exposure that they otherwise would not get.
I am thankful for all the people that I have met through the food community – everyone from chefs to influencers from all realms: food, fashion, beauty, and travel. The opportunities I have received have been amazing, and I am definitely looking forward to the future.
