Meet So-Hee Woo

Today we’d like to introduce you to So-Hee Woo.

So-Hee, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in an arts filled family; dancers, musicians, singers, artists. So it was an easy transition into finding art. I started off with traditional mediums, graphite, acrylic paints, etc. and by the time I got into high school I decided to pursue the arts as a profession. I had applied to different types of programs, fashion, illustration, fine arts, graphic design, but ended up attending Carnegie Mellon with the intention to study graphic design. Through the foundation year, I was able to discover industrial design, and from then on I was focused on designing products. Carnegie Mellon’s tech focus lead to me to being future-focused and always being involved in emerging technologies. Eventually, I found an interest in design fictions and future scoping and decided to do more work within this vein moving forward. I’ve had the opportunity to work at companies like IDEO and Microsoft as an intern, an industrial designer at Daedalus, for Art Museums, and for independent artists, all of which have lead me to my current interests in augmented realities and fashion.

As I continue graduate studies at ArtCenter College of Design in Industrial Design and my MBA at Claremont Graduate University, I’m looking forward to push the boundaries of AR design through my skills in experimental design and strategy.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Although I’ve kept a relatively straight path within the design realm, the type of design has fluctuated here and there. I think my greatest struggle was discovering my niche in the design world. What did I truly fall in love with and what was I willing to dedicate my practice to? I feel that is the most difficult question to answer and also the most satisfying to discover.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m currently a graduate student and I’m branching out with my own work. I’m looking forward to interning at Facebook as an AR/VR intern this summer. I’ve found a great interest in augmented realities and virtual realities and look forward to contributing my talents to further that industry. I can see a future in which AR is ubiquitous and opens a completely new platform of interaction to day to day life. I’ve set out to be a future facing designer aiming to help shape the future of emerging technologies.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success through your personal passion and how well you can inspire others with your work. Success is ambiguous to me, but when I’m able to feel fervent devotion for my work and am able to bring others on board I feel successful in spreading creative energy and inspiration.
