Today we’d like to introduce you to Grant Talley.
Hi Grant, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve grown up in a long time agricultural farming family. My family came to California in the 1870’s. We’ve been farming ever since. At the age of 12 I started working summers to help learn responsibility and build a solid work ethic. The money I made would go towards my clothes, non essential items and towards my future car once I turned 16. After college I moved to LA and worked at Maxfield in West Hollywood. I wanted to see what it was like to work in the fashion industry. I always had a passion for design and clothes. After a few years I moved back and started working on the farm. Last year I decided to start my own cattle herd on our ranch and this year I started selling grass fed beef sticks
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s been a lot of resistance. Everything seems to take longer, be more expensive and be much harder than expected. But I know these are all things that come with starting a business. Although things have been challenging the response to my grass fed beef sticks has been very good and I hope to find continued success in SoCal as I approach other grocery stores.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I farm in San Luis Obispo county, raise grass fed cows and sell grass fed beef sticks. I really wanted to show people that there are people in the younger generation that are growing and raising food for our nation. The average age of farmers and ranchers is 65 so its an older mans game. I care about health, wellness, fitness and the future of our country’s food sources. My beef sticks are made with 100% grass fed beef, organic ingredients, no sugar and a collagen casing. I wanted a product that I was proud to put my name on. This is a product that is better tasting, healthier and much more convenient (in packaging size) than the competition.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Seeing people enjoy my product is what makes me happiest. It makes all the hard feel like its paying off. Non business wise, I really enjoy being with my family and friends, hanging out at the beach, working out or cruising around the ranch. They’re all things that feel like an escape or a way to be in the moment and not think about all the stress going on
