Meet Giovanni Navarro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Giovanni Navarro.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My artistic journey started when I was seven years old. I lived with my uncle in Mexico who is a film actor. He used to take me with him to film locations where he would work and I remember hating it! I did not want to be there but I still watched intently.

As years passed, while in Middle school I attended a summer camp there we had to be involved in many outdoor activities, one day we were assigned to do a skit in the outdoors, I was paired up with a group of kids and we had no idea what we were doing. Suddenly something clicked and I took it upon myself to come up with a storyline, characters and we went up there and killed it! Several chaperones and kids told me I was ” a good actor” and that always stuck with me. Years passed and by the time I was in high school I had forgotten about that experience, it wasn’t until my senior year when I wrote my first play and starred in it as part of a fundraiser, it was a total success! the cafeteria room where we performed was packed and that is when I realized this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my days.

I went on to study acting in College, I worked with several theater companies in my hometown, I acted in everything I could get my hands on from small showcases to big musicals, I just wanted to act! One night I was performing in a college production and a local casting director by the name of Carollyn Devore saw me onstage, she would then cast me in my first Independent feature film entitled “Underclassmen” as the protagonist! In 2016 I made my move to Los Angeles to pursue bigger and better things and now I am here with Commercials, Award-winning Independent films, and more theater productions under my belt.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
An artist’s journey is never a smooth one. This is a very difficult career and in order to keep pushing forward after much rejection, one must have the will power, determination, passion, and most importantly the LOVE of the craft to keep moving forward in pursuing your dreams. I’ve had many struggles along the way both financially, emotionally even spiritually. However, these bumps in the road have made me stronger and more resilient. Every time I fall I get up being five times stronger. I remind myself that I am only able to do this through the Grace of God, He has given me this gift to be a storyteller, so when rough times come I simply tell myself “God will finish what he started, this is what I was meant to do”

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
The business of an artist relies on your “instrument” meaning your whole being. My instrument is precious to me. My body, my emotions, my voice, my image. It is vital to your craft. I’ve always considered myself a passionate artist. I give it my all regardless of how small the role might be. I commit 100% to each and every character I am portraying, there are no shortcuts for me. I can truly say that one of my biggest and most proudest moments is when I know I have made the audience feel what I am feeling onstage or on film. To be able to tell a story and stir something up in the viewer’s eye is the biggest reward I can ever have. It makes me proud to say I do what I love with a passion that only God could of given me.

I would like to promote the theater festival I am currently acting in. It is called “Brown n Out 5” and it’s a theater festival that celebrates the LGBTQ Latin Xperience. It is currently playing Friday through Sunday at CasaO101 Theater in Boyle Heights until July 7. After that I will embark on another artistic journey this time acting in two original plays (one written by me) at The Brisk Festival in Hollywood starting July 11 playing at The Broadwater Theater in Hollywood.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future is to simply keep pursuing my dreams. I hope to be working full time as an actor and I hope to inspire other artists along the way.
