Meet George Bovili of interDental, Beverly Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to George Bovili.

George, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in the Republic of Georgia in 1984. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, there was constant civil war in Georgia and living there became pretty unsafe. In 1993, my mom got the opportunity to get a temporary visa for me and her to visit the United States and that is when we moved to this country, I was 9 years old.

After arriving to the US we lived in Utah for two years. We had a family friend who lived there and helped her get a job. At the same time, she was studying to take her Part 1 National Dental boards so she could apply to dental school. She was already a dentist in Georgia and needed to go to international dental program in the US to get her license to practice. It was hard moving here and leaving our family behind, especially my dad and grandparents who we were very close to. Things were especially hard for my mom now being single and having to support me and at the same time studying to get into dental school.

In 1996, she got accepted to USC school of dentistry international program and we moved to Los Angeles. Her program was two years, since it was for students who were already dentists in other countries, and in 1998 she graduated. Shortly after we were able to move my grandparents, her mom and dad, and my aunt to come and live with us here.

The transition was hard for me too, not knowing much English at first but my mom did all she could to make it as easy as possible. I was able to pick up English pretty fast and eventually able to get out of ESL classes. In Los Angeles, I attended Emerson Jr high school and then University high school. From there I got my bachelors at Cal State Northridge and following in my mom’s path I got into USC school of Dentistry in 2009 and graduated in 2013.

After graduation I worked at a few different offices as well as my mom’s office in Beverly Hills. Over time I was able to build my own patient base and establish my own practice which I run today.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Hardest part was leaving my family behind when we first moved. I was really close to my grandparents from my mom’s side as well as my dad. Being so young, I didn’t understand why we had to move and all I wanted to do was go back. I know now this also put a lot of pressure on my mom and made things so much harder than they already were. I wasn’t able to visit my dad and family back in Georgia for 12 years after first moving here in 1993. Since then I try to go back every summer to visit.

Not knowing English at first was also hard. Adjusting to school wasn’t easy and making friends either. I was constantly getting into trouble but my grades were always good, my mom made sure of that, so that kept me somewhat on the right track.

In college one of my best friends passed away in a car accident we were involved in, along with a couple of other friends. He was sitting directly behind me as I was in the front passenger seat. This was really hard for me since he was the first friend I had made when I moved to Los Angeles and we had been friends since then. Kinda threw my school stuff of track but once again my mom, with the help of my grandma and aunt who at this time had already moved to live with us, were able to make sure I didn’t stray too far and got my stuff finished.

Please tell us about interDental, Beverly Hills.
My dental practice is called interDental, Beverly Hills. We offer a full range of dental services to our patients from preventative and cosmetic, to restorative and reconstructive. We take a comprehensive approach to dental medicine focusing on causes of oral ailments, not just the symptoms, with the goal of improving overall health through oral health. Our approach is patient centered and treatment planned according to the needs of each patient, as well as their own personal expectations. We emphasize prevention and maintenance of oral health, and plan each case in a manner most sustainable and beneficial to long term health.

I believe the initial appointment is the most important of all. Thus, all the initial consults, treatment plans, and cleanings are done by me. This allows me to assess each patient’s treatments needs and goals from the start and have a clearer understanding to what it would take to meet both. From then on all of the restorative and cosmetic dentistry is done by me, as well as most of the implant and surgical cases. I do have an in-house periodontist who does periodontal surgeries for our patient and an endodontist for complex root canal treatments.

I take great pride in trying to provide the highest quality dental care for my patients, as I believe all dentists do. To achieve this, I keep my work very detail oriented and treatments patient specific. Use the highest and most biocompatible materials available, and keep up with advances in our field to always look for ways to improve. Most importantly I listen to my patients and try to keep them fully involved in their treatments. I make sure all my patients fully understand their condition and what it would take to improve it, as well as why each phase of treatment is necessary and what it involves.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
That is a tough question to answer since I am constantly learning and changing my treatments based on evaluating my own past clinical work or new advances in the field. Dental field is constantly changing and treatments, materials, and equipment are constantly improving and I try my best to do the same.
