Today we’d like to introduce you to Flora Shepelsky.
Flora launched Wig Design by Flora in 2005, empowered with over 20 years of experience in the wig industry. She is renowned for her signature hair enhancement and replacement designs, the “Flora Illusion Fall™” and “Flora Topper,” that are uniquely constructed and styled with Wig Design by Flora branded specifications.
Flora – please kick things off for us. Where does this story begin?
I began my foray into the industry after enrolling in beauty school at the age of sixteen. While in beauty school, I began working for a custom wig maker and stylist in Brooklyn and simultaneously worked styling hair at a prestigious Manhattan salon.
I realized my passion early on. I loved the creativity and craftsmanship of working with wigs and instantly knew my future was in the wig design business. I honed my skills and technique in the small bespoke wig atelier and soon captured the attention of a worldwide wig manufacturer where I worked for nearly twenty years. After assisting thousands of customers throughout the years, I developed the perfect formula for well-crafted hair enhancement and replacement piece design, construction, and manufacturing.
Driven by the desire to create my own collection and brand coupled with my need to spend more time with my family, I launched Wig Design by Flora. I ventured on my own with my husband David, opened a tiny studio space in New Jersey catering to one client, and now has grown the business into a global brand with multiple showrooms. Wig Design by Flora is still based in New Jersey where thousands of wigs are stocked in the company’s Teaneck showroom. A location in Orange County, CA is managed by my son Joshua, and an online platform caters to their worldwide clientele.
I have coordinated fashion shows, charity events, and taught educational courses. My work has been featured in numerous magazines, newspapers, and on national television. Born in Russia, raised in Brooklyn, I currently reside in New Jersey with my husband and children. I work from Wig Design by Flora’s New Jersey showroom innovating new wig designs, overseeing operations, and meeting with custom and new clients on a daily basis.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Having your own business is always a struggle. I wanted to make the best product on the market and did not have a lot of money to do it. It took a lot of time and money to find the right hair supplier and the right factory to make wigs and pieces exactly to my specifications.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nope! I would do exactly the same thing.
