Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Christman.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Erin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started The Food Romantic with one main purpose – to share my love affair with food! I grew up in a suburb of Dallas, Texas in a household that almost always had a home-cooked meal on the table. It wasn’t until I moved out to LA in 2013 to attend USC that I really developed a passion and curiosity for food and dining experiences. I found myself continually searching for the newest/trendiest/tastiest spots week to week and I was always that person who kept the whole table waiting until I got a photo of my latest discovery!
After years of friends and family telling me that I should start blogging, I finally transitioned my personal Instagram account to @thefoodromantic in 2016. Initially, I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to go with my content or what my brand really was but I knew one thing: I loved researching food, shooting food, and talking about food – so I wanted to share that love with others!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a fun journey so far, but there have definitely been multiple struggles along the way. I think one of the biggest internal struggles when starting out was not focusing on the growth of others but simply focusing on my own individual path. It’s easy to become discouraged when looking at larger accounts and wondering if you’ll ever get there. Over time I’ve been able to shift my focus to strategize how I can authentically reach my full potential my own way – but I’d be lying if I said I never compare myself with others. It’s a work in progress, but I’m much better about it now than a few years ago!
Logistically speaking, it can be a struggle to create quality content shooting with an iPhone. I’m SO thankful for portrait mode, but the second I lose good lighting, it becomes significantly harder to get the shots I need. With that being said though, I feel like it’s been a blessing in disguise that I’ve continued to shoot with my iPhone rather than purchasing a camera because it’s allowed me to vastly improve my editing skills.
At the end of the day, I know there’s always going to be hardships to overcome to reach my goal and I’m okay with that! I know I can’t reach my dreams if I don’t put in the work!
Please tell us about The Food Romantic.
I’m a micro-influencer and content creator that primarily specializes in food & lifestyle. I often collaborate with restaurants, bars, cafes, etc. to shoot and share content with my followers to help promote their business!
I know I previously mentioned shooting with an iPhone is sometimes a struggle, but it’s also what I feel like sets me apart and is what I’m most proud of! I’ve had friends, followers, and businesses reach out to ask what type of camera I shoot with, which is a huge compliment considering I shoot everything with my phone!
I think the other thing that sets me apart is something I really enjoy creating – my Instagram Stories. Sometimes I have more casual stories that serve as a quick update of my day – but typically when I’m trying out a new spot, I invest a lot of time into my stories. I know that they go away in 24 hours and some people probably only look at them for a split second, but I love the process of creating a true ‘story’ to share my experience.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
It’s hard to pick one single memory – but I’d say in general cooking and baking with my nana as a kid is something I will always cherish!
