Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Chacon
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As I was getting my bachelors degree in Marketing at CSUN, I would spend hours watching videos by Dr. Sandra Lee aka Dr Pimple Popper. The science/study of skin has always fascinated me. From seeing her dissect lipomas the size of a football to watching dermatologists on youtube give amazing advice for free, I have never grown bored of the subject. I knew I always wanted to do something within skin, especially helping others because I struggle with eczema, along with working for myself & running my own business. During college I tried to figure out how to insert myself in the beauty industry now while finishing my degree. I used my tax refund money to pay for my eyelash extension certification courses. I did that on the side while working a full time job in the am and full time school in the pm. Eventually I graduated, got my first big girl corporate job and after a year decided I wanted to go to school and get my esthetician license. I decided to save up, quit my safe salary job and just go all in on myself. I am in love with what I do from facials, lash lifts to eyelash extensions. I am so grateful I have a consistent clientele where I can do what I love and pay all of my bills. I am constantly taking educational courses to enhance my knowledge and skills. I am currently in the process of figuring out what is my next step for the business… perhaps nursing school aka the aesthetic route. stay tuned 🙂
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not at all. The selling points are: making your own schedule, you decide when you want a vacation and doing what you love. Yet nobody really knows about the true struggles until you experience it for yourself. Starting a business requires a lot of money and to continue excelling you have to keep investing in yourself/the business. Many want to take this path and work for themselves but being an independent business owner also comes with being a: book keeper (log all of your expenses for taxes), content creator (you’re the whole marketing team), customer service rep (communicating with every client that comes your way), sales (are your clients coming back/prebooking?) and just simply being able to wear many hats. This is the most rewarding job I have ever done but also the most draining, still love it though.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Therapeutic Beauty?
My name is Emily & I am a first gen Salvadoran latina born and raised in SFV. I named it Therapeutic Beauty because I truly believe self care is the best care. It should be apart of our monthly rituals. Nobody teaches us in school how important it is to incorporate self care into our lifestyle. What separates me from the rest is that I specialize in natural beauty enhancements. My eyelash extensions are designed to compliment and balance everyones natural features to where my facials are focused on corrective skincare to give the best results. During my facials I love to play holistic music and sound frequencies so my client can really decompress and release any negative tension they may have been storing in their body. These sessions are simply not only facials but also genuinely a moment for them to treat their body with care and love. Our body is a temple. The goal is to always leave my location feeling happier and lighter. I am the most proud that I have found my niche and a specific clientele that desires my style of services. We are going 5 years strong and not stopping anytime soon.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I wouldn’t know if i would call it luck but definitely meeting the correct people at the right time and place (sounds like the universe is saying it’s meant to be huh). I have met some amazing people in life that have either connected me to other resources or taught me new things as a mentor. Networking really is key.
I’d love to shoutout my old boss from my last 9-5 job. He would sit me down and teach me about finances/investing and also pushed me to take my side hustle to the next level and treat it as an actual business. He was the first person to show me how to set up an LLC, get my own EIN, business bank account, etc. He definitely played a huge role as a mentor in my life and for that I am forever grateful.
