Meet Elizabeth Laime of Totally Laime Podcast in East LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Laime.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Elizabeth. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started out in comedy in New York at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. When my husband, Andy (a record producer) and I moved to LA, I decided to focus on writing but began to feel very isolated without performing. In order to feel connected to the comedy community we decided to put Andy’s recording equipment and my funny friends together to create the Totally Laime Podcast. Ever week we have a guest from comedy over to our house to hang out. From there several other podcasts were born (Totally Married, Totally Mommy, and Totally Beverages) and here we are, eight years, 1000 episodes and 12 million downloads later 🙂

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We entered podcasting as a fun outlet and there have certainly been periods where it has felt more like work than fun, however overall it has remained a fun endeavor for us. One of the most important things for podcasters to have is consistency which has been the biggest obstacle. We have had two babies in the last five years which made getting episodes up every single week very challenging. However I’m really proud to say that we’ve only missed about five episodes of podcasts over the last eight years.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Totally Laime Podcast – what should we know?
We entered the podcasting world when there were very few out there and no one really even knew what podcasts were. Now there are podcasts for everything, but ours has stayed true to being kind of a general “hangout” podcast where the conversation can go anywhere. I have definitely developed better interview skills over the last eight years. Andy and I both have other careers (I’m a TV writer and he’s a record producer) That the podcast has informed in major ways – in fact last year I sold a pilot to CBS based on Totally Laime! Many of my closest friendships in the entertainment industry has come from our podcast, and those are the takeaways that I’m really proud of.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Absolutely! Our listeners. They are incredible and supportive and engaged. We have a big online community and a lot of interaction with our listeners which keeps us going.
