Today we’d like to introduce you to Ja’Kani Tashmeka.
Ja’Kani, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began doing hair when I was about 8 years old in a Small town in Maryland right outside of the Washington D.C area. My mother had her own business as a salon owner and cosmetologist, so naturally I became a hair stylist as well. I started out as the shampoo girl, which lead to braider then weaver. Once I became a cosmetologist, my mother encouraged me to begin my own hair business and it has been growing ever since. I love what I do, and I love learning and meeting new people. “RockedByJak” is more than hair, it is my heart.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have definitely hit some rough patches along my journey as a business owner. Everything I have learned is based on trail and error. There were times when I wanted to give up and quit because things just never seemed to go as planned. But through it all I have become such a strong stylist. Every day I seek honest feedback from my clients because that’s what makes me the professional I am today.
What are your plans for the future?
Yes! There are so many huge changes in the works. I’m looking forward to not only growing my clientele but also growing a awesome staff to assist in each client’s Beauty needs. We will not only touch the heads of people but we will incorporate makeup, Nail Care skin care and other services. In the near future, RockedbyJaK will become more than just a salon, it will grow into a company.
Let’s dig a little deeper into your story. What was the hardest time you’ve had?
I have definitely been through a lot in starting my own business. There’s been times when I wanted to quit because I felt that I wasn’t good enough or that I couldn’t compared to other great stylist. There were times when I felt overwhelmed by my personal life obstacles and I was only wasting time attempting to be my own boss. But over the past 3 years I have learned that experience truly is the greatest teacher, and thanks to my supporters I have grown into not only a stronger hairstylist, but a stronger woman. I have faced my fears and I have stuck with it and it has totally paid off. Rock by Jack is not only what I expected it to be but it’s far beyond my dreams. I am utterly grateful for making it thus far.
