Meet Donna Lam of Donna Lam Photography in Downtown Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Lam.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I wanted to become a photojournalist when I was in college so I took a lot of photography classes. Right before I graduated, I took some pictures for my cousin’s wedding and I completely fell in love with wedding photography – then my friends and friends of friends started asking me to take pictures of their weddings, that’s how I started my business.

For the first few years I had a full-time job from M-F and I did wedding photography on the side over the weekends. It was crazy! Sometimes it means working 7 days a week non-stop. It had taken me around 3 years to finish building up my portfolio and to develop a stable client base before I decided to focus on wedding photography solely.

Has it been a smooth road?
It wasn’t easy at first, since I had a full-time job for the first few years as mentioned. But most of my clients treat me very well and all these amazing people have really helped my business and boosted my confidence. There were also a lot of non-photography related things that I had to learn to deal with, like bookkeeping, filing tax, and etc. – those were not fun at all!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business mainly focuses on wedding photography, engagements, boudoirs, and family sessions. I am known for my soft & romantic style and I am always able to capture the joy and laughters during the session. I think it sets me apart from others because I am truly touched by all these joyful moments and getting to capture the love of my clients makes me proud.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think LA is a great place for wedding photography as we are surrounded by a lot of beautiful locations, and our weather is always great! It makes it a lot easier for us to schedule our sessions without worrying too much about the weather.

Traffic is the only thing I would like to complain about our city – not sure if it could be improved at all!
