Meet DJ Smart

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Smart.

DJ Smart has been described as one of the most versatile and gifted dancers of his generation, and possibly one of the most brilliant artists in the world. At a very young age, he showed interests and natural ability in areas such as basketball, track, theatre, voice, architecture and design, writing and public speaking. However, his ability to relate and express himself through the art of dance is what gained him much recognition.

Growing up dancing at parties, family reunions and neighborhood talent shows simply sparked his passion for performing and after winning several local contests and talents shows, he was encouraged to start training formally at the age of 12.

Hailing from Detroit, he began his formal training and quickly excelled in all areas including ballet, jazz, modern, hip hop and more. In 2011, he graduated from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. As a graduate with honors, earning a BFA in ballet performance, he was awarded the “Outstanding in All Styles Award” and the prestigious “Stella Moore Prize.” He has traveled the world teaching, performing and choreographing ever since.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. Challenges include:
– Racism
– Jealousy from peers
– Feeling alone from being the only person of color on many jobs
– Harassment
– Depression

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a performer. I act, sing, dance, write, produce, direct, model and more. I’m known most for my dancing. My athleticism and physique set me apart from others.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as living up to your own expectations or surpassing them without comparison to others.
