Today we’d like to introduce you to Diego Montemayor.
Hi Diego, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My father, a very interesting and inspiring character always told me- “Be your own boss even if you are broke as a joke, the beginning is always hard. Work for your dreams, not other people’s dreams”. And with this in mind, I graduated with a BA degree in political science, aspiring to get my “dream job” in any large political organization and live off of a good salary. I did exactly what my dad told me not to do. A few months after graduating university, I found myself on a plane on my way to Bangkok to begin my internship and then my so called “dream job” at the United Nations’ headquarters in Asia. But regardless of the great experience a university such as CU Boulder gave me, the entrepreneurial spirit inside of me knew I needed to be in the business world. During my flight to Asia, I couldn’t stop thinking about what I was going to do with the business idea I had come up with during my vacation time in Colombia, the idea of Chamba.
Colombia 2019 I found myself looking for a tailor in the middle of a country I didn’t know, going place to place, business to business across the whole city of Bogota with no success. It seemed bizarre not to have easy access to these services in this day in age, especially with how advanced technology is at the time. With no success, I returned to my ex-girlfriend’s place baffled and exhausted. As I was sitting to enjoy a good cup of Colombian coffee, an idea hit me hard, “what if I create a platform where all these services from tailoring to dog walking to constriction are readily accessible, on demand and all from your phone with a few clicks”. I was obsessed, I had found my purpose. The idea was ready, the attitude was good and the energy was there, the only problem was that I knew nothing about tech nor coding. I needed to find a partner with whom I could build this app and take it to the market. My sphere was very limited and none of my friends knew how to code, I was also broke and could not afford to build an app this expensive.
But as an entrepreneur, one has to be resourceful and a problem solver and during my last days in Bogota, I decided to pick my phone up and find me a tech co-founder, whatever it took, I was willing to do, I was not leaving that country without a co-founder. I pick up my phone, log into Instagram and type “#developer” in the search bar. I found thousands of posts and reached to countless users with no success. I close my eyes and lay back on the couch, as I am dozing off my phone pings and it’s this dude named David Ruiz. We started chatting and yes, he was Latino, yes he liked the idea, and yes he lived in Bogota; BINGO. The next day, we met at Bogota Beer Co for a few drinks and by the last sips of our second beer, we had founded Chamba App together. Asia 2019 Right after meeting David in Colombia, I had to go back to Colorado, then to Asia for my “dream job”. After seeing my family and getting everything ready for my new adventure, I landed in Bangkok- a city I have visited before that now I would be calling “home”. I didn’t know the culture, the language nor the city and once again, I needed to be resourceful and a problem solver.
After a few days, I adapted very well and even made countless local friends that took care of me because I genuinely cared for them. Carrying a United Nations’ badge is super flashy, especially in countries like Thailand, I was loving it. But after a few weeks, I realized something that would change my view on how I saw success for myself. I wanted change and I wanted it now, something that I could control and that wasn’t entangled with world politics- Chamba. Three months into the UN, I decided to come back to Colorado and continue to work on my app. COVID-19 hit, it was my turn to show the world what I was made of. United States 2020 Without a job myself, I decided to build an app for jobs! Ironic. We launched as a simple website first, then we signed up workers that were impacted by the pandemic, then we would call small businesses in hopes that they would be hiring. Those who gave us their vacancies and then we as the Chamba team contacted all of our subscribers to share these opportunities with them. We would email a list of about ten jobs twice a week during the hardest time of the newly discover pandemic. Chamba was providing job opportunities when everybody else was laying people off. Chamba launches mobile app and 20k users sign up. Our story continues here…
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t been smooth but it has definitely been worth it. The Chamba Team has made this journey a million times easier because they are all rockstars at what they do. In Chamba, we don’t like to call them “struggles” we like to call the day to day tasks as they are just part of what we need to do as a tech startup to take our company to the next level and help as much people find jobs as we can. These include things from financing, customer satisfaction, product development, doing the right marketing and protecting our company culture.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Chamba App?
