Today we’d like to introduce you to Deanna Hodges.
Deanna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started in the apparel and textile industry about 30 years ago. I have worked in every aspect of the business and worked for many different companies before starting my own brand in 2005. I started a California lifestyle resort wear brand in Hodges Collection. After many years of success and many trips to Peru I decided to start a home goods lifestyle brand and I did that with H2 Home Collection.
I am committed to helping make the world a better and more equitable place. My Fair Trade and Women’s Empowerment Initiatives are close to my heart and allow us to provide work to single women/single moms in the remote villages of the Andes Mountains.
Our top-quality products do so much more than make homes beautiful, they have a major impact in the lives of over 650 women who are able to provide for themselves, their families and their villages with the products that they lovingly craft for us. This allows them to be self-sustaining and have the pride and confidence that comes with making your own way. Hope is a very powerful thing.
I love being able to design, create and produce beautiful items that can turn the homes of our customers into their private sanctuary or peaceful oasis and the fact that we can help so many women in the process is above all that I could have ever hoped for.
I grew up in a tiny town near the Florida-Georgia border and did not have much in the way of resources or mentors. There actually were no mentors that I knew of. Growing up poor in the south made me determined to help those who do not have the resources that I have today. I want all women to have a voice – a loud and hopeful voice and the ability to provide for themselves and their families, without compromising their values or their bodies in order to do it. Our hope is that women will rise up to a point where no one can hold them down ever again and that is why we do what we do.
Has it been a smooth road?
Lol. Absolutely not! I’m sure that there is not one entrepreneur that would say their road has always been smooth.
There are so many struggles on the road- especially when you take the path of entrepreneurship. There are production challenges, sales challenges, being able to stay ahead of the masses with design and so much more. This does not include family and friends who get upset because you work too much and don’t want to hear about your “business” because that is where your passion lies and what you want to talk about most of the time. Owning a business like this is all-consuming and adding initiatives like The Women’s Empowerment Initiative and Fair Trade Initiative takes it to an entirely different level
Regardless of all of the bumps and struggles along the way, this is my passion and I will endure whatever it takes to make the world a more beautiful and more equitable place, one pillow and blanket and one woman at a time!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with H2 Home Collection – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My business is H2 Home Collection which includes beautiful home goods such as throws, pillows, blankets, and interior decor items, as well as other items such as robes, sheets and towels and Hodges Collection which is a Women’s Contemporary resort wear line that is manufactured in Southern California.
The majority of our products are made in Peru and Turkey. We are committed to helping make the world a better and more equitable place. As a way to work towards our goal, we have instituted Fair Trade and Women’s Empowerment Initiatives, These initiatives are close to my heart and allow us to provide stable work to single women/single moms in the remote villages of the Andes Mountains. Allowing them to be self-sustaining and build a foundation for their family and villages. Many of these women have been victims of violence and dehumanizing behaviors.
Our products can be found in over 600 retailers and online at www.h2homecollection.com.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Southern California and feel so blessed to live in a place that many people dream of and vacation in. I feel like I live in paradise. The weather is the best and the opportunities are unlimited. I love the diversity and the availability of any kind of food that you could possibly want at almost any time of day or night. My least favorite thing is the traffic!!
