Today we’d like to introduce you to Daisy Guillen.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I created my first michelada mix back in 2015 and at the time, I never even considered the idea of possibly turning that into a business. After that first initial creation, I continued making my mix for any type of friends or family gatherings that I would join. Throughout the time, I would always get compliments on my mix and be told how tasty it was but I never took it for more than just compliments.
It wasn’t until the year of 2017 at a friend’s birthday party that I actually considered the possibility of selling my michelada mix. I remember I made a large batch for everyone to enjoy and the amount of compliments and requests I received was honestly pleasantly unexpected. However, I knew I had no idea on where and how I should begin. I contemplated the thought and idea for a while but eventually, with life’s surprises intervening, those thoughts and ideas were put aside. Fast forward to 2020, I ended up losing my job as a result of Covid-19. I was uncertain as to how I would get by and in those moments of fear, I knew then and there what I had to do. I woke up one day, thought of a significant name for my mix, created a logo that I felt would be the best fit and I simply began by telling my friends and family that I was officially going to start selling my popular michelada mix.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road at all, but I am extremely happy of the progress I’ve made in such a short period of time. One of the major struggles I faced was simply pushing myself to just DO IT. I had to block out all of the normal fears everyone has when embarking a new challenge or in this case, the start of a new business. The basic negative questions filled my head. What’s the first step? Will my business actually be a hit or will it be a complete failure? I was scared of the idea that I would invest my savings and in the end be left empty-handed. I knew I had to try though. I reminded myself of the popular saying that “scared money makes no money”, and it was then and there that I made the decision to just go for it. I started off by investing into supplies for a small amount of michelada mixes, just to see if and how they would sell. There were times where I had to throw away a mix or two because they did not sell but I understood that no business grows one day to another so I kept pushing myself and continued advertising as much as I could. Most of the time my main struggle is simply being able to find the mason jars in which I distribute my mix. For whatever reason, mason jars seemed to be sold out everywhere during quarantine time. I thank God I was always to find some alternative in order to keep my customers happy and coming back for more.
La GuateMex Michelada Mix – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is a home-based business which consists of creating michelada mixes, to which you can add your choice of beer, or substitute with soda water for those who do not consume alcohol. Making a michelada is never a simple task, which is why I specialize in creating a ready-to-go mix that is as easy as 1, 2, and 3. All you need to do is add your choice of beer to about 3-4oz of my mix (depending on personal preference) and voila, you have the perfect michelada. As a company, what I am most proud of as of now, is the fact that not once have I received any type of complaint. All of my customers always leave happy and always return joyfully for more. I am still constantly working to create new and extravagant flavors but I am filled with immense pride and joy to see how my small business is slowly but surely growing. What I feel sets me apart from others is my ingredients. I make sure to always purchase fresh, quality produce. I am currently working on a vegan mix so that everyone and anyone can enjoy a deliciously refreshing michelada, minus the guilt.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, success or being successful is when you reach a point in your life in which you’re able to look back at all the ups and the downs, all the accomplishments and struggles, and still feel a great sense of pride and joy knowing that through any and all adversities, you never gave up. My goal is to one day be able to reflect on my journey without holding any regrets or remorse for missed opportunities.
