Today we’d like to introduce you to Da’Dreion Murrell.
Da’Dreion, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a singer-songwriter, musician, producer, arranger and performing artist originally from Omaha, Nebraska. My musical journey began when I was very little around the age of five. I loved to perform, sing, and preach for my family. I loved the feeling of sharing my musical gifts in front of people so I entered into my elementary talent shows. Once I learned that other people enjoyed my gift of music, I knew that music was something I wanted to pursue for the rest of my life. In middle school and high school, I was apart of every music activity I could find. Show Choir, Concert Choir, Jazz Band, Musicals, Talent Shows, Church Choir, and so much more. At that point, I knew I wanted to make a career out of music so in high school, I worked extremely hard to win as many scholarships as possible so I could attend college. By the time I graduated high school, I had received ten different scholarships including the Susan Buffett Scholarship and the Gates Millennium Scholarship which are full cost of attendance awards. Plus, I was accepted into my dream school Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. During my time at Berklee, I gained so much knowledge, experience, development, and tools that have made me the artist I am today performing with and for the likes of John Legend, Stokely Williams, Civil Right activist Angela Davis, and many more. I created a band that went viral, I orchestrated large performances, I built a catalog of original music, and I gained so many important relationships with students, faculty, and industry mentors. I graduated Berklee College of Music Class of 2020 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Songwriting minoring in Africana Studies Magna Cum Laude while also balancing a career and being a husband and a father.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a child, I was a survivor of the foster care system. At the age of six, I was placed on seven different behavioral medications, I was experimented on by the system and hospitals, I was heavily bullied, abused, neglected, and so much more. So now as a recent graduate, I am an avid advocate for foster care reform. In May of 2020, I released my debut EP “I AM LIFE” in honor of foster care awareness month to shed light on this terribly forgotten topic. I seek to use my traumatic experiences in foster care to impact generations internationally through the healing power of music and the art of live performance. I consider myself to be a soul therapist. My music heals, inspires, sheds light, and resonates with the deepest parts of the soul through my message of hope.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am a singer, songwriter, and performing artist! I create, write, and perform all of my music. I own my own record company called Can Jam Entertainment. I consider my genre of music to be Inspirational, Soul & R&B. What sets me apart is I make sure everything I do in my music and performances inspires and uplifts others but also is therapy for the soul. I always have a story and a message to tell in every aspect of my artistry.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I’m very stubbornly driven. When I set my eyes and mind on a goal to accomplish, I’m fully committed to achieving what I set out to conquer. Plus, I’m a visionary so I always see the bigger picture which allows me to lead others to the finish line.
