Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Tizcareno.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Cynthia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I always had a passion for art, and I knew that I wanted a creative career. I decided to pursue a career in Graphic Design. I graduated from California State University, Northridge with a Bachelors degree in Art, emphasized in Graphic Design and a Bachelors degree in Psychology. Psychology is another interest I had but my focus has always been on Graphic Design. I decided to challenge myself to illustrate something new every day so that I can continue to improve my skills.
In 2016 after I graduated CSUN, I worked as a packaging graphic designer for an electronics company where I gained experience in packaging design, but I still continued to work on cute illustrations after work since that is what I really love to do. Illustrating cute animals is what kept me motivated and happy. In 2017 I found my dream job at a toy company as a graphic designer. I love my job because I still get to illustrate and work on cute designs. Although I work full time I continue to work on my own small business because I love it.
My small business started by creating illustrations for fun every day. In 2016 one of my good friends invited me and a couple of friends to share a table at Designercon where we can sell our artwork. That’s how I started creating cute merchandise from my artwork. I now create my artwork into enamel pins, stickers, keychains, etc. to share with people who enjoy my art. I love vending at events such as Designercon, LA Comic Con, and Patches and Pins Expo. I absolutely love preparing for these events and learn something new every time.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, it wasn’t so easy since everything was new and there was so much to learn about such as event displays, building my own brand, having enough confidence to put my artwork out there for everyone to see. Also balancing a full-time job, family, and small business it can be difficult and at times overwhelming.
I learned to manage my time and plan things thoroughly to help balance everything out. Starting my small business involved a lot of time and dedication but my passion is illustrating and it makes me so happy to have supportive people that like what I do.
These people keep me motivated and happy and make running my own business easier.
Please tell us about Cynthiatizshop.
In my business, I specialize in cat-related designs. I create them into enamel pins, stickers, keychains, and Zipper bags, I am slowly trying to expand to other products besides pins to grow my small business.
I’m most proud of creating cat illustrations that my customers love because it reminds them of their cat. I am only one person that does everything from designing, social media, organizing stock, packing orders (Sometimes my mom helps take the package to post office). I am proud of being quick to respond to emails, and pack orders as soon as possible.
What sets me apart from others is probably my focus on cat artwork in my art style.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Favorite memory from childhood was at Christmas when I believed Santa Claus was real. I always wanted to try to see if I could see Santa but I was never able to stay up late.
One Christmas morning I ran to the Christmas tree to see the presents Santa left but when I went to the tree I didn’t see anything when I told my mom it wasn’t there but when I looked back at the Christmas tree the presents were there, it was like magic!
I was so excited because I thought Santa Claus used magic to stop time and put the presents under the tree. But apparently, I just didn’t see them the first time.
