Meet Brianna Gordon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brianna Gordon.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am from the east side of Detroit, Michigan. I lived a regular life of an inner-city girl until my cousin Jasmine helped me enroll into Central Michigan University. From that point on, I realized how many kids and students like me, who come from similar socioeconomic backgrounds, have been held back and are lacking the proper resources to navigate public institutions like universities.

After my freshman year, I decided that I would want to transfer to a university where it is more diverse and I can get more experience. I asked my cousin Jasmine if she would help me transfer to an HBCU and she ran all the numbers for me and after seeing that it was very expensive for out of state at HBCUs she suggested an alternative of me coming to Los Angeles and finishing my degree at California State University LA. This was in March of 2018, today I am working on completing my last semester as an undergraduate at CalstateLA with a degree in Pan African studies.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I believe that life is forever changing. Moving anywhere without your close friends and family can be a little stressful. But it also opens up a world of possibilities and new adventures. Leveling up is kind of scary, it’s like “I have all this new opportunity now what am I going to do with this? I hope I don’t fumble the bag!”. But I have been staying focus on my goals not letting the city consume me and also realizing that when you go hard for yourself, hard work pays off at the end of the day. Covid has also really impacted my life. Mental health is really important to me so I started seeing a therapist who is also black woman and practicing meditating.

What else should our readers know?
I am working on diversity consulting.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am very charismatic and determined. I’m scared of failure like everyone else but I never let it stop me from starting something. I think resilience is very important being able to be knocked down the start over again or being to make something happen with little to no resources.
