Meet Cody Hopkins of Baker Street Snow

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Hopkins.

Hi Cody, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started tuning and waxing skis in a local ski shop in Newport Beach 24 years ago. I absolutely loved the job and the culture so I pursued it up to this point and beyond. Doing construction in the summer and working at the ski shop in the winter was the best!
I worked at a couple ski shops along the way and had always dreamed about having my own store. Sooner or later I started selling skis and boards. It started out just a few and then quickly grew to where we are now. Adding outerwear, tunes and rentals and boot fitting to make a full service shop.
About 5 years ago also brought in skateboards, which has always been a passion of mine, and that has been super fulfilling.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been far from a smooth road to get to this point. Always struggles and things to learn along the way.
Economy, bad winters, rent increases, cost of goods, etc. The struggle list just goes on and on.
If I wasn’t so passionate about what i do i would have pulled the plug a long time ago.

We focus on our knowledge, service and community relationships to get through these hard times. We have worked very hard to make a good name for our shop and build a community around it.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I own a ski, snowboard and skateboard shop.Thats Pretty rad in itself ! Our job is to stoke people out and get them on the best gear possible! We specialize in boot fitting, sales, rentals, tunes and selling cool skateboards. I have been doing this quite a long time and I’m fortunate to have employees by my side that have been with me for years!
We are super small and family owned, no investors or partners. My wife Jen does all the hard lifting behind the scenes by taking care of the books, payroll, and literally everything else that happens outside the store. She is the best!
My daughter even comes in and helps out once in a while.
The last couple years have been extremely difficult with the economy and the lack of snow. My team and I have persevered through it all and I am extremely grateful for them sticking with me and helping me push through these hard times.
I think we’re best known for our knowledge of the equipment that we sell. We are very hands-on and make it a point to try everything we can. We are constantly learning. We’re also known for carrying smaller brands that you wouldn’t find in big box stores or most other ski and snowboard shops.
What I am most proud of is my shop that we built in Huntington Beach. It was a lot of work to get it to where it is now. We have murals on the walls and on the support beams, Skis mounted on the ceiling, custom built boot fitting benches and Retail space. I was very hands-on for all of the build out and I’m extremely proud of how it turned out.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I think being successful is being able to make a living doing what you want. Whether it’s running your own business, making music, art etc. For some people they are happy working for somebody else and have a normal job and that’s totally fine if that fulfills them.
Success is being able to take time off to spend with your family. Success is being able to take a work trip up to Mammoth to ski and snowboard with your friends haha! Success is being able to do what you love for a living. In that sense i am successful and greatful.
