Meet Christine Liu of Christine’s Cookie Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Liu.

Hi Christine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a sustainable lifestyle blogger and author behind the YouTube channel and blog called ‘simply by christine.’ My background is in industrial and packaging technology, which inspired me to start living a minimalist, low waste lifestyle, spreading awareness about more simple and sustainable living in a consumeristic society. I’ve been blogging for the past five years, but Christine’s Cookie Co. is a new side project my husband and I started this past year. We’ve always talked about opening a small business of our own since we started dating, and my cookies always came to mind since I was an avid baker growing up. Quarantine gave us the time and ability to work with one another more regularly, so I asked my husband, Peter if he was up for exploring the idea of starting a cookie business, and here we are now! The idea of Christine’s Cookie Co. is to go beyond creating a delicious, organic cookie – we aspire to bring local farmers and food producers closer to our customers. Industrial food production brings about pesticide toxicity, polluted waters, soil erosion, etc., and we want to show consumers what our food producers are doing to challenge the status quo of agriculture and food manufacturing. Our society has lost touch with where things come from and how they’re made, and we want to bring local farmers closer to home.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
With the start of any new business, there are quite a few things to work out – this has been a completely new journey for us, as neither of us have worked in a commercial kitchen or in the food industry. So we’ve had our fair share of hiccups with figuring out commercial food equipment, determining suppliers, and right now, we’re trying to nail down our business plan in order to grow while remaining financially and environmentally sustainable in our practices. Through every uphill battle though, I look forward to seeing how my husband and I work together, as we’re enjoying the learning that comes with starting this business! We continue to remind ourselves that at the end of the day, we’re baking cookies to bless our customers, our farmers, and our local community – these are the reminders that keep us motivated through the lows.

We’ve been impressed with Christine’s Cookie Co., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Christine’s Cookie Co. is a new small business focused on making quality, organic cookies with a mission – to bring awareness and grow the local food movement. We currently offer three signature cookies – chocolate chip, chocolate walnut, and vegan chocolate chip, with 80% of our ingredients are sourced from local food producers in northern California and 100% organic ingredients. In an effort to be environmentally conscious, all of our cookies are also packaged plastic-free and in compostable, paper-based packaging. You can order cookies on our website (https://christinescookie.com/), which we deliver locally to the South Bay Area or ship nationwide.

What are your plans for the future?
We dream of opening a brick and mortar, but know that may take years to reach, especially with starting a business during this time. But as we continue to grow our business and customer base, we look forward to working more with our local suppliers to tell their stories, producing educational content about sustainable food production. We’re also brainstorming more ways that we can give back as a business, whether it’s donating our monthly tips to a local food charity or joining a sustainable business organization!
