Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles Lyons.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I got started making music in 2013 when I was going to high school in San Diego (Escondido). My music draws a lot of inspiration from the beat scene, as well as jazz, funk, hip hop and electronic music. I work primarily with local artists in southern California but don’t tend to stick to one type of sound. In addition to making music, I’m part of the managing team for Public Records, a Long Beach based record label that does releases and a lot of events in LA county.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anything worth doing isn’t easy. There’s a lot of personal growth involved with making music and being an artist that stems from overcoming various obstacles and finding out how to make your vision work. The biggest struggles is staying out of my comfort zone, always pushing myself to try new things. It’s easy to get stuck in a way of thinking (musically or in life) and lately I’ve been working hard to get a new perspective on life/my music.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I specialize in music production and songwriting. I also do some DJing for when I perform live. Personally, I’m proud of how far I’ve come with my sound and my development as an artist, especially in the past few years. I’m also really proud of the work I get to do in Long Beach and San Diego, whether it’s putting together a show with local talent or connecting artists so they can expand their network of creatives. I’m not sure what other people think sets me apart from the crowd, but for me it’s in my sound and creative process, as well as my work in the local SoCal scene.
