Today we’d like to introduce you to Cecilia Albertini.
Cecilia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a filmmaker, writer and director, originally from Milan, Italy. I moved to the States when I was 19 to go to college in New York City, where I graduated from Columbia University. After working as an actress in Italy in film and TV, I decided to transition to writing and directing. I worked for several film production companies in LA and in NY, and then I earned my MFA in Film Directing from UCLA. During my time in NY and in LA, I wrote, directed and produced dozens of short films. My latest short, LABOR, was an official selection in over 40 festivals all over the world, garnering awards and being featured on platforms such as The Wrap and KCET Link.
I got to where I am today by working hard and staying focused on my goal. The road ahead of me is still very long and I am aware that this is not a sprint, this is a marathon, but I am up for the challenge. I love the unpredictability of my job and my industry, I thrive in the uncertain nature of it, I get too bored when things are predictable and stable.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It never is a smooth road. So many rejections. First, when I was an actress. I went to dozens of auditions and only got a few parts. Then as a director. I submitted my first films to many festivals and got rejected so many times. There are many heartbreaks in this business. The important thing is to never stop loving your craft, it’s the only way to survive.
What else should our readers know?
I am a filmmaker whose work focuses on socially relevant female centric stories.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Self-awareness. Knowing yourself, knowing your strengths and weaknesses is key. Knowing what you need to be happy and lead a balanced life that isn’t only career-focused but that also has other elements, like family, friends, a support system. We need other people, even if we don’t want to admit it sometimes.
