Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassie Boettcher.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My last name is like “betch your bottom dollar.” I lived my life, up until the past five years, in Wisconsin (with quick affairs in NYC and Japan). I moved to LA without a job and into an apartment with a random Craigslist roommate, who turned out to be amazing. I’ve been here ever since.
I’m a musician, songwriter, and singer. I also sometimes work on highly un-educational reality television programs and speak Japanese. But everything started because of playing music and writing songs.
I never felt totally accepted in Wisconsin being a creative person. I grew up in a conservative area, where a lot of people are set on one way to do life: get married, get a job, pop out babies. They don’t bash other things. They just don’t get it. It was hard, discouraging, and I often felt like an outsider whenever I talked about my creative goals. So I took a risk and went west.
Living in LA is a complete 180; it’s the most creative place in the world. Everyone does something; which is one of the many reasons I love this city. It’s diverse and full of culture and inspiring. And I finally feel free to do my stuff. LA has allowed me to come into my own.
Please tell us about your art.
I write songs and sing them.
I love to feel. I write so others can feel. I’ve gotten some comments in the past few years of writing songs that are “too sad” and “too slow.” But that’s my goal; I want to convey emotion. To show that it’s okay to feel and be human. No one’s perfect.
So often we hide our emotions behind a fake smile or Instagram post (yeah, I’m guilty of doing that all the time) – but what’s the point if we don’t put our emotions out there and be vulnerable? The world doesn’t get to be a better place.
I want my music to inspire others to realize that feelings are good. And that you don’t have to be perfect. And you can allow yourself to feel.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I think success is being vulnerable and brave enough to do your own thing. Maybe that’s because I’m finally starting to feel that myself? I am, I don’t know why I put a question mark there.
But honestly, I think that being brave enough to not give an f and “just do you” is success right there. That takes guts because we’re all terrified of opening up and showing the world our true selves. Once you do that, you can do anything.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
