Meet Caroline Blackburn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Blackburn.

Hi Caroline, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I always loved making things whether it was sewing or painting on canvas. Of course, art was my favorite subject in school. I studied art and art history at Boston College and earned an MFA at Art Center in Pasadena. During summer break in college, I attended Pasadena City College and met ceramist Phil Cornelius. He led me to make large ceramic vessels and firing them with unusual materials. We used to run Raku firings on Saturdays at the school until the fire department was called to many times and the art department shut us down. After school, I was really focused on creating abstract paintings, however I was spending more time in the office and less time in the studio. I had a long professional career working at the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles and UCLA Architecture. These two experiences introduced me to many of the world-class artists and architects of our time. It wasn’t until 2010 that the creative energy to open a practice happened. Today I have studio in Sherman Oaks.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The challenge is always do I have something to contribute to the ongoing dialogue of contemporary craft.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create abstract ceramic vessels that disrupt the notion of form. I specialize in large artwork with extreme glazes. I am very proud that I have received more than a dozen awards for my artwork. My work is unique and breaks traditional ceramic aesthetic rules.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I love art and architecture books that explore the development of their work. I am an art museum junkie. I love to visit museums and spend hours investigating exhibitions.
