Meet Carlos Felipe Silva

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Felipe Silva.

Thanks for sharing your story with us, Carlos. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I’m a composer for film and tv currently based in Los Angeles, California.

Music has always been part of my life. I was born in Caracas, Venezuela, where I started playing the violin since I was ten years old. I had the opportunity to have a classical training from a young age; performing with youth orchestras and string ensembles in my hometown. After I finished high school, I got accepted into a wonderful Art School in Traverse City, Michigan: Interlochen Arts Academy. This place was magical for me because, for the first time, I was surrounded by art and music 24/7. I developed a work ethic, and a commitment to my craft thanks to this amazing place, and I met many talented friends that I still keep in touch with.

Right After Interlochen, I moved back to my hometown and Auditioned for a position with a professional Orchestra. I was lucky to play for five years with The Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, one of the most important orchestras in my country led by Gustavo Dudamel and Alfredo Rugeles. At that time, I was performing symphonic repertoire on a weekly basis, and I started to write small chamber pieces for piano and other instruments. I had always been fascinated with film music and its capacity to convey emotions. I decided to apply to Berklee College of Music to formally study Film Scoring.

Berklee gave me a great foundation on Film Scoring that allowed me to start my professional career as a composer once I moved to Los Angeles in 2015. I got my first job as a composer assistant for Jeff Toyne. It was a great opportunity to learn from an established composer where I had the chance to write additional music for Shows like Hit The Road starring Jason Alexander, and Hallmark movies such as Christmas Homecoming and Cottage.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a roller coaster of experiences and opportunities. It hasn’t been easy. There have been many ups and downs along the way, but I’ve always continued to move forward no matter what. One of the greatest challenges in L.A. is to be able to sustain yourself and at the same time, to continue to develop your art. Sometimes you have to compromise in order to make it happen. The first years in the career of a composer are full of uncertainty, and you have to be able to get used to that feeling and keep doing your work. I believe in the end; everything falls into place if you just continue on your own path.

Please tell us about your work.
I’m in the business of film scoring. As a composer, you are your own company, and that means that being an entrepreneur is not an option, but the only way to make it happen. We have to constantly look for work and create our own opportunities by developing services and relationships with creatives. As a composer, I write music for different mediums such as Film, T.V., and Video Games. Every project is a new challenge, and a new opportunity to show your best work. We have the chance to create lasting experiences and change the world with every word, every note, and every frame we make.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would pay more attention to the business side of the industry, and not only the creative aspects. I would also try to develop more relationships with young filmmakers and creatives.
