Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Rhea.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a child, I always loved old photographs. A friend of my mother had really old photographs from the 1800’s and I would always sneak to look at them whenever I could. These were well-protected photos and I was forbidden to get my sticky little hands on them!
I loved how time was frozen and the stoic faces that stared back at me were quite intriguing. I guess you could say, I just loved pictures but didn’t know was that I actually had a gift inside of me that would someday come out. My mother was an immigrant from Costa Rica and I wondered why she didn’t have old pictures like her friend. It made me even more curious about pictures so much so that I was always looking through what little collection she had.
I took my first photography in my sophomore year of high school but had a not-so-good experience, as my teacher was extremely non engaged with the students and allowed us to do whatever we wanted, so I was completely turned off!
I wouldn’t really pick up another camera (except for recreation) until my junior year of college and the only reason I avoided it until then was, that I thought I would repeat what I experienced in HS. The other reason was, I was terribly afraid of the photography professor because he always looked so mean.
Well, I had no choice but to take his course and that was the beginning of my career as a photographer. My professor was really tough and never held his tongue but I soon realized that I’d better strap myself in for the ride and hold back the tears! My first assignment was called “strangers” the challenge was take photos of people we didn’t know. Most everyone in the class went to supermarket parking lots and photographed unsuspected people and believe me, they were dots on the paper (very far away). My boyfriend at the time, suggested we go downtown LA to photograph homeless people. We found two very interesting men who were only too happy to have their picture taken. My images were tight and properly composed. I had not idea what aperture was and how to adjust shutter speeds nor ISO. I was literally winging it! I referred to my projects as happy accidents.
I returned to the lab and began working on my assignment, I developed the film and printed my images and turned them in. Critique day was frightening because I had no idea what the professor would say. Turned out, he was so impressed with my work! After that, all my assignments went extremely well. My only downfall was, I could not understand apertures, shutter speeds, ISO nor depth of field. I was FAILING every single test and quiz.
In the end, my professor wrote my final review and told me that he was forced to give me a C because I had not understood photography from the technical standpoint, but my work was great. That’s when I realized that photography is my God-given gift.
I now shoot Fashion & Events for big names like Gucci, Chanel, Valentino among a few others. Another large part of my business is children’s headshots for working children and those pursuing their dreams in Hollywood. I feel incredibly blessed to do what I absolutely love.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ha Ha Ha! No! The truth is, there have been days that I literally want to throw my camera out of a window, dust off my hands, close the window and walk away. The reality is, I can’t. It is how I earn a living and I love it so much even when I am frustrated. The artist life is a challenge and it takes a strong or a stupid person stick with it. There is a heavy price to pay for this life, believe me, I know. People think it’s easy and fun, well, truth is they are right some of the time. You see, when work is flowing it’s a lot of fun! However, depending on the job…”easy” is debatable. Overall I love what I do, so my attitude is…it’s always FUN and EASY. The downtime feels crazy depending on how long you have to wait between jobs. I have spent so much money on continuing education in my field and it is very costly, the sacrifice is great. Most people don’t understand what I’ve had to do to get to where I am.
Please tell us about Carla Rhea Photography.
My main focus in photography is fashion, events and children’s headshots however, I shoot most everything. I have shot events in Orange County for organizations such as CHOC, JDRF, Festival of Children and so many others. My work has been published in Orange Coast Magazine, Modern Luxury, Coast Magazine, The OC Register, Angeleno Magazine, and much more. I also shoot for South Coast Plaza and some of their amazing retailers like Gucci, Valentino, Versace, Lavin, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Canale, Harry Winston, Roger Vivier, Camille, and the list goes on.
Runway is one of my favorite things to shoot. Whenever I get the chance to shoot a fashion show I am like a kid in a candy store. Another favorite are children’s headshots. Children are funny and I love depositing seeds of life into their hearts. Encouraging a child is the best part of my shoots and I love to see their confidence build right in front of my eyes. BTW, I love concerts as well. I was once voted one of the TOP 10 Children’s headshot photographers in L.A. by Hollywood Moms Blog…that is an honor!
I have had the pleasure of photographing celebrities at events like Scarlett Johansson, Cindy Crawford, Kelly Clarkson, Smokey Robinson, Earth Wind and Fire to name a few.
I am currently focused on a hi-fashion model photo and video shoot with a friend and mentor. I am also reworking my website and adding a few products, building my brand and creating multiple streams of income.
My dream job, shoot more kids of course but I would love to shoot for brands and boutiques…women, men and children!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have plenty, but this one stands out the most…My twin sister used to make up stories, sort of like a soap opera because it continued everyday. I used to lay back and listen and ask a lot of questions. I was able to go to another place other than the reality I was in. The journeys she took my mind through were incredible and they made me feel like I was part of the story. I was sworn to secrecy never to reveal to a soul about her story. I have always been one to share everything good because I am always so proud of those who are doing well, or who are giving and especially creative. Well, what do you think I did? I shared it with a close friend and my sister never told me another story again.

I, personally can attest to the beautiful work of Carla Rhea Photography! She has quite an eye for what works and what doesn’t. I have never seen anything less than stunning come from this beautiful woman’s camera. Carla has a way with making her clients feel so comfortable in front of the camera. There’s no stress or fuss when taking photos with her. Just down to earth easiness. This is so important, because when you receive your photos to choose…you want to be able to say “I want them all!” It’s way too hard to choose! Carla also has a way of taking stills. We had the privilege of working with Miss Carla and we love her. Her creativity and her eye to bring out something that’s not even there is amazing.
