Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Mack.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began illustrating at an early age and progressed to digital artwork when I was a preteen. My craft is heavily influenced by my childhood. I have always had an interest in creating unique characters and a visual language of my own. As a teenager, I wanted to do it all. I danced, ran track, joined a choir, and acted in plays. It wasn’t until the end of high school where I figured out that I had a particular fascination with design in terms of media and entertainment. I started by becoming a publicity designer for high school functions. I designed t-shirts, posters, and buttons for school plays, clubs, and events. I left my mark by entering and winning a contest to redesign the school crest. When I turned 18, I became a licensed vendor and began designing as a freelancer for small businesses. It was around this time that the Savannah College of Art and Design hosted an informational seminar at my school and I decided to major in graphic design. On campus, I’ve spent a lot of time collaborating with other talented creators. After about a year of the curriculum, I found myself changing my major to motion graphics. I knew a lot less about it, so I decided to dive deeper and expand my palate. I am now a senior and am currently a freelancer in graphic design, illustration, and motion graphics.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing in life comes easy, and we all have our shortcomings. When choosing a creative career, you open yourself up to criticism and judgment from those who do not believe that it is a lucrative path. Artists have this innate desire to be valued in a world where art programs in grade school are being cut and there are machines and apps created to imitate our skills without a human behind them. This challenge brings about insecurity in one’s craft because it comes from a personal place. Technology is ever-evolving and keeping up with that has been a challenge for me, whether it’s a new program I need to become familiar with or having to adjust my techniques to do things more efficiently. I find myself constantly fine-tuning my craft and the work is never really done. It only improves and has to speak for itself while at the same time resonate with others. Throughout my life, I have had parents and a sister who have supported me through anything, and friends who have been by my side from the very beginning. For that, I am incredibly thankful.
Please tell us about Mad Mack.
Mad Mack is an alias I came up with to characterize myself as a creator. I specialize in illustration, graphic design, and motion graphics. Specifically, I am equipped for logo creation, digital portraiture, character design, title design, fliers, posters, t-shirt designs, stickers, album covers, and branding. I am known for my colorful and expressive works, things that grab your attention. I pride myself on my ability to work in multiple art styles and produce quality work that is unique to my client. It is important to me that I bring someone else’s vision to life and set them apart from others rather than centering myself in that equation. I have no apprehension about doing something different and putting my best foot forward.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When I was about four years old, my parents got me a set of action figures that I did not want to play with. I preferred drawing these characters, cutting them out, going to Staples, laminating them, and playing with those instead. I felt like this way, they were mine. Similar to how a child’s height is measured yearly by tick marks on a wall, my earliest form of artistic growth was measured by laminated figures, of which I would redraw every year as I became better. I think this fueled my drive for self-improvement and it came in handy for future fields I decided to explore!
