Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Davis.
Brittney, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been doing hair for eight years, but honestly feels like a lifetime. I was the true definition of it “takes a village to raise a child” so because of that, I spent lots of time with my grandmother in her salon. I helped clean brushes, did homework in the back, and sometimes helped her take rollers out of her clients hair when her schedule was backed up.
At one point, I was moved around a lot with my mother and we settled in Nipomo, CA. I attended high school, and that’s when I fell in love with theatre. By my senior year, I wanted to be backstage with hair and makeup, and I slowly started realizing I wanted to be behind the scenes.
So I decided to get my cosmetology license so I could fall back on being behind the chair, but at that point was really wanting to be backstage. As I was building a business behind the chair, I fell in love with the day to day connection. After being in the building stage and working retail on the side for years. I decided to jump in feet first and put all my energy into hair. I slowly started falling in love with the education aspect. And at 4.5 years in I became an educator for Hot Heads hair extensions. One year into that, I was asked to be part of Color Wows education team. For the past 3/4 years, I’ve been educating other stylists, working behind the chair, and ironically doing some platform work. (On stage). The beginning of this year I decided to step out on my own and refocus some energy into being an independent stylist. So I’m now in my own studio working on building a brand!
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been easy! From day one in this industry, I knew I had to dedicate all my energy to grow this into a business where I could support my self. Growing up with a single mom who struggled financially, I knew it was really important to put myself in a situation where I could be self sufficient and independent. Another thing I didn’t realize was because of some of my struggles growing up, I ended up struggling with anxiety and imposter syndrome. So even though I had known I was able to accomplish all these things in my career, I still held myself to a certain expectation/standard. Now that I am a little older and being more independent. Thats helped with confidence and has prepared me mentally to take on this COVID 19 situation. Which is a struggle of its own.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
So I’m an independent hairstylist. I rent a studio suite and its called B.
I decided to do my own thing because I was feeling like I needed to challenge myself. And I’ve always said with my mentor if I’m not uncomfortable I’m not growing. So this was a way for me to test my skills that I’ve learned over the years and see if I had what it took to run a business.
I specialize in extensions and color however I do a little bit of everything!
What I’m proud of with my career is the focus on education because it empowers me to come back to my clients with all the knowledge. What I’m proud of so far with the business (studio) is I’m able to offer a one on one experience where I can collaborate with the client and customize a look unique to them.
What sets me apart from others? I’m not exactly sure. But what I can say is I keep a very professional atmosphere while being a real-life human with my clients.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think Orange County is a great place to build your business. I would 100% suggest anywhere in orange county. Huntington Beach was where I grew my business and it was partly because of the local vibe downtown.
I think the only thing that is hard about here is that it’s very competitive because there are so many salons.
