Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittani Warrick.
Brittani, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My Aunt is Grammy Award-winning artist Dionne Warwick, and my Cousin is the late Whitney Houston. For a while, I thought that meant that I was supposed to be a singer, so that’s what I did. I started singing around the age of 6, I recorded my first EP by the age of 16, and I was performing all throughout my teenage years. It wasn’t until the end of my teens that I realized my true passion… writing. I had always written here and there as a child (I won contests) and I wrote my own songs. I felt the most “seen” through my writing. I went on to write a television show, several short stories, and more poetry than I can count. I felt that I was really hitting my stride until 2012, when my brother passed away.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
After my brother died, my mental health did a skyrocket downward. I tried to hide it by attempting to move on with life, which resulted in the total destruction of my mental wellness. I stopped doing everything that I loved. I stopped getting out of bed. I stopped being myself. If you were to ask me three years ago what makes me so inspiring, the part of me that is diagnosed with social anxiety and depression would have told you “nothing at all”. After a lot of isolation and destructive behavior, I decided that it was time to seek help. So, I went to therapy. I always thought therapy to be a sign of weakness, but in time, I learned that it was actually a sign of strength. Therapy has helped me to become a stronger, more wholly-conscious individual. I began to love myself in ways I never thought I could. I was able to let go of things and people holding me back from my truest and most authentic self. I was able to begin healing from my brother’s death. I have gone back into the family business of entertainment (where I belong). My family has been there with me every step of the way. They have never given up on me. Mental health and wellness is highly achievable. This is something that I plan to shed light on for the rest of my life through my writing. It is important to take care of yourself, love yourself, accept yourself, and strive to understand others in the process!
What else should our readers know?
I am in the “family business,” as you might say. I get to tour the world and work in production for live events. That’s my job. If you were to ask others what they know me for, they would say as a writer. You will always find me writing and working on a project. You will also find my nose in a book studying to finish my degree as a mental healthcare professional. My ultimate goal is to bring the utmost awareness of mental healthcare to the entertainment industry. This is something that I have just completed within a project that I am currently seeking to further develop.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success has been such a tainted word since we now have social networks like Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. It is so easy for someone to log on, look at a few photos of models on yachts or on vacation in London and feel like a total failure. Success is a mindset. It is not measured in material things. If you are living in pursuit of your purpose, remaining kind and inclusive to others, and giving back when you can – I’d say that you’re living a pretty successful life. It’s not about who you know and how much money you have. It’s about what you know and how you apply it to life.
