Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Fisher.
Brett, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After graduating from UCLA with a degree in music I spent the next 7 years working in live theatre in L.A. and Ventura, conducting musical theatre orchestras and producing shows. After “casting” many productions and auditioning many musicians for my shows, I found myself also helping businesses find great talent to hire.
In 2010, I transitioned full time into recruitment with a focus on finance and accounting roles. Over time, I noticed what traits were typical of top-performing candidates, which resulted in those candidates getting hired. Patterns started to emerge and from that framework, I took on higher level searches for more sophisticated roles (including director and C-level).
By 2016, I had evolved my practice into a search consultancy focused on finding and placing top talent in operational-related role for startup to lower mid-market firms throughout greater Los Angeles. I still have a dream of becoming a pilot, but for now, I love what I do, and the work we do changes lives every day.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all. I started in recruitment working with a colleague, but after about a year we agreed that it would be best if I went off on my own. So with 1 year of training, I was off to create my own agency. To add to the stress, my wife was expecting twins in about 5 months and was just put on hospital bed rest. All I could do was run fast and work as hard as I could. The biggest struggle was to stand out as an expert in a sea of competition, who had been doing recruitment for a lot longer than I had been, and with greater resources. Why me? Why should we hire you? Timing, confidence, and some luck will get you that first gig. Then it’s up to you to deliver, and consistently. It took about 8 months until I got my first client, and after a few early wins, I had just enough wind in my sails to bring on my first employee. The team brought momentum and more clients. After a few years, one of our best clients asked us to consult with them part-time on recruitment strategies and interview training. Our focus on that one client left us with little left over to work on, and the business started to plateau. The candidate market also tightened resulting in no fees if our candidates didn’t place. After several missed placements and confiding in my retained partners who were successful at charging from the beginning of their searches, I decided to evolve my business model to more of a secured model. Today we offer a hybrid service of contingent and retained search which results in consistent wins and placements for our clients.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Brett Fisher Group – Search Consultants – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We work with amazing clients. They are innovative and disruptive, forging new ways of solving the world’s problems, and most importantly, they are translating ideas into action. They recognize that they couldn’t do what they do without great talent, and that’s where we come in. Talent is the fuel that transforms our client’s grand ideas into reality. We find them great people to run their businesses.
As a boutique search firm, our expertise is in search. My specific strength is in interviewing candidates. Listening to their real motivators and pain points. We focus on direct hire opportunities for exceptional individuals looking to advance their career in accounting, finance, marketing, sales, HR, and administrative roles primarily in southern California. We make purposeful introductions that are in alignment with both the candidate’s career goals and our client’s search criteria.
We’ve worked with clients in just about every industry including real estate, hospitality, professional services, financial services, entertainment, technology, startup/early stage, medical devices, life sciences, and consumer products. Our typical client has revenues between 5M and 150M and is located in greater Los Angeles, Orange, or Ventura counties.
What sets us apart is our patience and willingness to be unstoppable with the most challenging searches. We are most proud of partnering with several internationally based clients to find them their first hires for their expansion offices in Los Angeles.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Yes. I have two life commitments I need to fulfill: (1) become a pilot and teach flying or fly as a career, and (2) live for one year in Switzerland (the country where my mother is from). I’d love to integrate my passion for flying and recruitment together. Now that I have all these great clients, I’d love to be able to fly them around the world. You have to dream big!
