Today we’d like to introduce you to Brea Mitchell.
Brea, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in Dallas, Texas, and was a standout basketball player. I played basketball all of my life, just about every day. I received a full college basketball scholarship. Every day in college, I went to class, went to a three-hour basketball practice, did homework, and then went to bed. Usually “homework” meant writing a paper of some sort, since I was a communications major. I would wake up the next morning and do the exact same thing all over again!
One year while in college, I took a spring break trip with some friends to Huntington Beach. We had the best time, and I promised myself that after I graduated college, I would move to Huntington Beach to start my adult life. Basketball always controlled all of my life decisions, so I decided that once it was over, I would do something fun and liberating. I loved basketball, and always will, but I was just excited to be a normal, regular person finally. – or so I thought.
I did move to Huntington Beach after college like I had promised. I’ve had so much fun and made great friends, but the workforce hit me like a brick wall. I had never thought about what I wanted to do with my life after I no longer had basketball occupying all of my time and aspirations. I started to get this feeling that I had no other skills in life besides basketball, and I couldn’t figure out what path I was meant to be following when it came to a career. I worked in restaurants, dog daycares, marketing firms, none of it fulfilled me. I vented to my parents that I’m not cut out to sit in an office cubicle all day. I didn’t understand why I was having so much trouble forcing myself to be “normal” and get that “normal” office job like the rest of my friends.
I did some self-evaluating and realized how strong of a writer I have always been. Writing papers in my Communications classes was always a strength of mine, I had a skill for putting words together on paper. I decided to start a blog of personal essays and opinion articles of topics that I am passionate about. (thebreakawaybrand.com)
From this blog, I have scored freelance writing opportunities with Locale Magazine, Don’t Tell Comedy and even some copywriting opportunities with a Marketing firm in OC. I work from home, and I have creative freedom.
The Breakaway Blog helped me kickstart my writing career, and while it has been a slow process, doors have recently been opening for me, and I am extremely excited about it. This process has taught me how important patience and faith in yourself is in all areas of life.
The Breakaway Podcast will be kicking off this fall, and I will be interviewing other professionals who also struggled with finding their life calling when it comes to finding a fulfilling career and lifestyle. You can subscribe on Apple Podcasts!
I hope you check out thebreakawaybrand.com to read interesting stories and viewpoints that I think people from all walks of life can relate to!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not smooth. Things can seem stagnant and it can be extremely discouraging. But I’ve learned how important it is to stay patient and to always be working on your craft at all times. Also, when it seems like a door just isn’t opening, try entering through a different avenue, change your approach, adjust accordingly.
Tell us more about your work.
I create content. I write about why an event is cool, what’s exciting about it, why you need to be there, or why a certain company or product is going to make your life better or easier.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’ve learned that when you just go after your dreams full throttle, things just tend to fall together in your favor. Things work out, and weird lucky things happen when you genuinely work hard and continue to believe in yourself. I like to refer to them as blessings, but sure, luck tends to be on your side when you are following your dreams and doing things that fulfill you.
