Today we’d like to introduce you to Big Teezus
Hi Big , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always dabbled in content creation without fully realizing it. I’ve always loved filming videos and editing them to music, but I never went past doing a few videos for my friends or participating in various online challenges. About four years ago, I decided to take content creation seriously and find my niche. I started with UGC, got bored immediately, and tried lifestyle content. However, my side of Chicago content wasn’t the same as that of mainstream creators, who only focused on the downtown area. One day, I went online and talked about the finale of NBC’s This Is Us, and then it all blew up when I reviewed Teen Mom: Young and Pregnant. Talking back to the TV and knowing random pop culture facts has always been my thing and was always my niche; I just had to find my path.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No journey is easy, and content creation is not an exception. I started gaining traction while working a full-time marketing job. I surveyed my audience to see which shows required same-day or next-day reviews to stay active on the FYP. I would watch Hulu’s Kardashians and Teen Mom: The Next Chapter the same day, take handwritten notes during the episode, and immediately film so I could upload videos while at work. I’d finish around midnight or 1 a.m., then wake up at 6 a.m. and start uploading. This pattern got me to 40K followers in 4 months, but I still hadn’t heard from brands. I had to learn how to pitch myself, interact in the comments of brands, and build an engaged and active community. Creating media kits, sending emails, watching shows and taking notes, researching, being my graphic designer, and filming and editing my content—all while working full-time—is not for the faint of heart. Now, two years into my content niche, I’m just starting to get into the flow of things.
I still don’t know everything, and I’m learning how to network at certain events—figuring out which ones I need to be at versus the ones I want to be at. I’m also expanding my content to maintain my current audience while introducing myself to a new one, all while pitching myself. It’s all new, but when it’s something you truly want to do, it doesn’t feel hard.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My name is Big Teezus, an Outsouth princess from Chicago who loves film, TV, pop culture, and WWE. I’ve built an online career by introducing my audience to film and TV through chaotic reviews. I learned how to break down movies for audiences through two early experiences. The first was with the bootleg man, who introduced clients to international films, dramas, and more—a talent not everyone has because the title and artwork can turn consumers off before seeing the trailer. I also learned from my time as a crew member at AMC Theater, where I had to be knowledgeable about the actors and story-lines and be able to describe them to families, couples, elders, and more.
I used both early experiences to create content that introduced new movies, documentaries, and TV shows to my online community. I explain the plot to my audience while giving them the juicy details to hook them in. One example is the Netflix Martha Stewart documentary—many people commented that they would have never watched it based on the trailer and artwork alone. If I hadn’t done the review, they would have never known that Martha Stewart lives by the motto, It’s only cheating if a man does it. These are important messages for young women. My chaotic review broke it down for viewers in a way that made them want to give the doc a chance.
I love that my chaotic reviews resonate with audiences and allow them a space to speak freely about their favorite shows. It’s our chance to be unserious in our debates while maintaining our respect and love for the movie, TV show, or WWE PLE happening.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Be yourself and the people will find you
