Today we’d like to introduce you to betty gregorian.
Hi betty , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
born in redondo beach and raised in the south bay. moved back to the south bay after graduating from UCLA with a bachelors degree in fine arts & then earning a masters degree in fine arts from CSUN
while earning my teaching credential from CSDH, i taught high school then elementary school in the TUSD.
lived near granny’s & went from being a regular customer to what was supposed to be a summer employee but never left!
after losing my dad in 2013, had a heart to heart with the former owner; asked if i could possibly take over the store when he & his wife were ready to retire; the answer was YES!
in 2021, they were ready, and we (my husband and i) prepared to take over GRANNY’S in 2022!
i continued teaching in 2022 then went on a leave of absence to run the store, & then resigned from education after 25 years.
been a small business owner of granny’s since 2022.
thankful our parents & grandparents instilled such a strong worth ethic in both my husband and i
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
it was a hard decision of course to leave a career i was so dedicated to and worked so hard for & in. educating children from primary to high school was so rewarding, but so is being the owner of a 100+ year old business nestled in a small beach neighborhood. learning how to run a business (even though my husband had owned bike shops in the past) was also a challenge, but it made us stronger and wiser.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
established in 1924 deli added in early 1990s featuring boars head meats & cheeses
nestled in a hermosa beach neighborhood (bodega like) where ‘everybody knows your name’…literally!
nostalgic candy, locally made baked goods (including my sister’s nicknamed after our dad, BIG G), craft beers, wines, snacks, everyday household items, etc
weekend pop ups featuring local entrepreneurs & their products (100% of sales belong to their company; we just provide the real estate)
i host STORYTIME WITH BETTY every thursday at 4pm on the granny’s patio
we collaborated with local hermosa brew co to create our own GRANNY’S wheat pomegranate ale (a nod to our armenian heritage)
catering local events including annie seawright 4th of july volleyball tournaments & hermosa museum hall of fames
receiving 2025 chamber of commerce legacy award
donating GCs & various merch to local events
participating in special events with the chamber of commerce
we love being & supporting LOCAL
