Today we’d like to introduce you to Belle Adams.
Belle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I spent my baby, toddler, and teen years bee-bopping around a Georgian suburb called Marietta (a few stone throws away from Atlanta). I was a wet noodle when it came to sports or… most things that involved coordination, but I had a lively imagination and could often be found, digital camera in-hand, costume on, chirping directions at the neighborhood kids to help piece together my next guerilla film project. It wasn’t until I hit the stage that I truly was bit by the “acting bug”, and if you sat 12 years old Belle down today, she’d say that bug did indeed, grant her superpowers. So I took this new love of acting and ran to the hills with it!
From then it was musical after musical and play after play with Lassiter High School’s rag-tag and underfunded, squad of drama misfits, and a few local low budget film projects. After that, I was off to college where I studied Theatre Performance at San Diego State University and was challenged in all the yummiest of ways. Some days I wore dreads and fishnets, other days I was a mute clown with a cherry red nose, and at the best times you could catch me some odd feet above everyone else doing rope tricks for an acrobatic monkey sequence. I also got in good with some of the brightest filmmakers on campus who set me up with some juicy on-screen opportunities.
After three years of step-ball-changes, contact improv, and student film fests, I was off to LA toting a Bachelors Degree and drive. I made a home for myself within LA’s local improv scene at The Nerdist School, and now Impro Theatre where I met sensational people who introduced me to other sensational people who referred me to classes where I met managers who introduced me to agents who got me auditions which landed me jobs that got me where I am today: working, in Los Angeles, as an actor. And remember, I started this whole thing as a baby.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not always smooth, but never uninteresting.
Of course, there’s the struggle to make ends meet. I was a barista at Gasolina Cafe for a lovely stint and worked some questionable acting and modeling jobs to make rent work. Sometimes I had money. Sometimes I didn’t. Either way, I ate In-N-Out fries for dinner.
Then there’s the adjustment to navigating acting as a business which meant understanding myself as a product which is necessary but bizarre and without some healthy compartmentalization, it can be a disorienting mode to operate from. I’ve also tussled with the human stuff like fear, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, homesickness, and self-doubt.
To round it up, I did what I could and basically played everything by ear. The career path of an actor is not a straight arrow. It’s a squiggle. So, like a squiggle, I learned how to bend and adapt and find new routes when old routes needed rerouting. My practice of improv became a sort of mindset blueprint for my every-day. The basics of the blueprint being: There’s no wrong or right answer, support others, go with the flow and have a good time.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
It’s a veritable smorgasbord these days! I’m an actor, voiceover artist, writer, director, singer/songwriter, and lately I’ve been dabbling in animal impressions. The most recent play-time I got to have on a set was for Bless This Mess, a sitcom comedy produced by Elizabeth Meriwether and Lake Bell, airing on ABC. I played a long-haired, untamed teen odd bird called Janine who recurs throughout season two.
Other recent credits include Perry Mason on HBO and S.W.A.T. on CBS. I’ve also appeared on Disney Channel, Freeform, and MTV.
Currently, I am auditioning from home, writing a quirky young adult mini-series, and looking at possibly starring in a narrative podcast series in the vein of Homeland. With most things on hold in the current health crisis climate, I’ve found myself honing in on voiceover work, volunteering at LA Food Bank, performing live Zoom improv shows with Impro Theatre, painting, and dedicating time to the efforts of Justice LA and Black Lives Matter. Under non-pandemic circumstances, I divide my time as an actor between teaching young ones the art of acting. They keep my inner child-heart thumping.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
At present, I’m rollin’ with the punches.
I just started up teaching again. It brings a lot of youthful zest into my days, which is something I consistently look forward to. I am also discussing a potential voiceover project for a narrative podcast with similar flavors to Homeland. Aside from that, I’m keeping the doors and windows of opportunity wide open!
