Today we’d like to introduce you to Barrett Crake.
Hi Barrett, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m from a small Texas town and studied film production at UT Austin. I always knew I wanted to be in LA. I used my final semester to do internships out here and I just stayed! I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do but I knew I wanted to work in Entertainment. My first job was at “The Price is Right” and after two years, I got the acting bug. I studied acting and started going out for auditions maybe a little too quickly! My first audition was for 90210 and by some kind of luck I booked it! That was a sign from the universe and I decided to leave my job. A few more years went by and I did more roles on TV & even a few Independent films. My favorite was the comedy “Eternity: The Movie” where I got to play a fictional Daryl Hall-like character. It was such a blast and where I was really introduced to the music industry because I got to record at Pulse Studios in Silver Lake and I felt a shift… I wanted to be making music! I decided to go back to school to properly train in music theory and songwriting.
Then I began to make cover songs for YouTube to explore what my sound would be. That led me to meeting some International collaborators from Italy and Chile! Long story short, they asked me to sing on the 2017 remake of “Rhythm of the Night” which was produced by the son of the original producer. After the success of that track, I started to release my own original music. I love music videos so I’ve always made a video to every song. I just released my 5th original song of 2020 and I am finally feeling like I’ve hit my groove. Because of the lockdowns, I’ve taken to Instagram and Sessions Live to livestream to fans from around the world. I’m thankful to be living in a time where I can connect with people from all over the world through my music!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh God, no. Looking back at how I started, I was full of doubts and insecurities. I still am! I wanted to be ten steps ahead of where I am and since I wasn’t, I would get major anxiety and depressed. But now I ignore those toxic thoughts much easier. The cliche is true for me… I’ve always been my worst enemy. I over-think everything and don’t think I’m good enough. I am proud of myself for always keeping my eye on my goal and pushing through.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love this question because it took me YEARS to own up to myself that I’m an Artist. People used to ask me what I did and as I was transitioning from Actor to musician, I had a hard time explaining it to people. Then I felt terrible about myself again. Thankfully I’m over that now… but I’ve been creating my own music and videos for almost three years now. Doing so has led me to different countries and I’ve been able to work with so many incredible people from all over the world… and I only feel like I’m just now getting started! Thanks to the Internet, I’ve been able to find an audience as an independent musician and my fans have led me to trying new things that I wouldn’t have thought I could do. My latest music video for “You Got Me Like”… I was so nervous to do a dance music video but I talked about it with fans in IG Live and they gave me the confidence to try it! It’s now the video I’m most proud of and has paved ground for my new direction. I don’t think I’ll ever stop learning or growing and now that I’ve settled into that fact, I feel like I’m just getting started. I love performing and I love creating.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Perseverance. When I transitioned my focus from acting, I decided that music is going to be my number one focus from now on. There have been many times where I wanted to quit because I didn’t feel like I was good enough. But each time, I settle back down by saying to myself “this is a marathon. Not a sprint. I’ll only get better if I keep moving forward”.
