Meet Babatunde Afolabi of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Babatunde Afolabi.

Hi Babatunde, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a DJ, Singer, Producer, and photographer. I was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and grew up in the UK. I came to the US for college, attending both Michigan State and the University of Southern California. When I was a kid, I was big on musical theatre; I loved to sing and dance, and being on stage gave me life. I found revitalised that passion when I started DJing. I joined DJ club at Michigan State in 2017 and never looked back. I am a natural entertainer, and putting a smile on someone’s face gives me so much energy.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Life will always have its ups and downs. Being a DJ means you must constantly prove yourself. There are so many artists in LA, and you have to be consistent so you don’t get discouraged. For me the struggle were overcoming imposter sydrome and having belief that I am really good and what you do, and moving with an unwavering confidence.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an afropiano Artist/DJ and photographer. What sets me apart is my unique sound, my creativity, and my ability to coalesce business and creativity. I am smart, educated, and I am constantly analysing. I see opportunities where people don’t. For me, trying new things and knowing I will eventually be good at it is my forte.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
You should always give way too much before you ask for everything. Always be available; don’t be too money-hungry off the bat. Times are tough, but being too greedy will be to your detriment. Be humble, say thankyou, and be reliable
