Today we’d like to introduce you to Antonio Pelayo.
Hi Antonio, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Antonio Pelayo, it started back in 2008 when I was curating small art shows at small galleries and bars. I decided to stop doing that and create one large event where Art, Music, Fashion and Culture merge. I started producing El Velorio from a place deeper than events, it came from culture, memory, and love. I wanted to create something that honored our traditions in a way that felt alive, powerful, and unforgettable. Day of the Dead was always more than imagery to me—it was family, remembrance, music, art, and spirit. I saw there was space to build something that celebrated our people with beauty and respect, while bringing together communities that needed a place to gather and feel proud. And to give young artists an opportunity to shine.
What began as an idea became a calling. With passion, hustle, and faith, I built El Velorio into more than a festival—it became an experience where culture breathes, ancestors are honored, and creativity shines. Every year it grows, but the heart remains the same: to celebrate life, remember those we love, and create something timeless for our community.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all, so many road blocks, from having issues with artists, vendors, talent, venues….one of the biggest struggles has been booking a venue and then things not working out last minute, then having to find one fast. But we keep it moving and not looking at these challenges as negetives but situations to learn from and grow.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
What do you do?
I am a fine artist specializing in pencil realism and animation cel art, creating a rare body of work that bridges traditional hand-drawn craftsmanship with contemporary fine art for gallery exhibition. I also produce and curate cultural events including El Velorio, La Bulla, and House Issues—platforms that celebrate art, music, and community. Professionally, I serve as Disney’s Master Inker in the historic and iconic Ink & Paint Department, while also leading philanthropic efforts as the founder and CEO of the Pelayo Foundation.
What do you specialize in?
I specialize in pencil realism and animation cel art, combining technical precision with storytelling, nostalgia, and emotional depth. My work honors traditional techniques while reimagining them in a contemporary fine art context.
What are you known for?
I’m known for my pencil realism artwork, my innovative animation-based fine art, and for producing impactful cultural festivals that bring together artists, musicians, and diverse communities.
What are you most proud of?
Above all else, I’m most proud of being a father to my two children. They are my greatest inspiration and the legacy I value most.
What sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart is my ability to operate at a high level across multiple creative worlds—fine art, animation, live events, and community building. I combine artistic craftsmanship with vision, leadership, and the ability to create experiences that resonate culturally and emotionally.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
II believe luck is often created through hard work, consistency, and being prepared when opportunities appear. The more effort you put in, the more “luck” tends to find you. I also don’t view difficult situations as bad luck—I see them as opportunities to learn, adapt, and grow. Some of my greatest lessons and breakthroughs have come from challenges that initially looked like setbacks.
