Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Little.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Music has always been at the heart of who I am. It lights me up in a way nothing else does. My mom has been a piano teacher and performer my whole life, and I remember sitting underneath her baby grand piano while she taught and then trying to plunk out what I’d heard her students play afterwards. I studied piano from an early age and then in junior high and high school I found my love for singing.
It was around college that my vocal development got a little off track. I received a scholarship for vocal performance at the University of Utah and mainly sang classical music, but what I really wanted to sing was musical theatre and contemporary music.
My overinflated young mind thought, “Oh, I’m a really good singer, I got a scholarship, blah blah blah.” But, when I tried to start singing in those genres, boy, I really did not know what the heck I was doing. It was as though I didn’t know how to sing at all. It was very heartbreaking for me, and it was that struggle, that led me to be the singer, actress and voice teacher that I am today.
While I continue to work as a professional in the entertainment industry, I am a certified voice instructor for the Institute for Vocal Advancement where I receive a world-class education in vocal pedagogy and am rigorously tested on an annual basis for certification. I am truly passionate about helping others find and free their authentic voice.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Before finding the right training, the struggles I had with my voice were real. I had a break in the middle of my range that I was constantly trying to hide and my voice would embarrassingly crack during performances from extrinsic tension. It was incredibly frustrating, but I was determined to get to the bottom of it.
I worked with many different teachers and tried several methods of vocal training for singing and speech before eventually, I discovered a teacher who taught the IVA technique from the Institute for Vocal Advancement.
I made drastic improvements with my voice, and I became obsessed with how and why the technique worked, so I entered their certification program to learn how to teach it.
My experience sent me on an unshakable quest to free my own voice, and now I want to share that freedom with others.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Annie Little Vocal Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
As a certified voice instructor, I am here to help you find and free your voice. I know how challenging singing can be because I’ve been there, and that is part of what makes me unique.
I personally sing in a variety of genres, mainly contemporary pop music and musical theatre, but the great thing about learning vocal technique is that I teach you how to sing, so you can choose what to sing. I love teaching teens and tweens and actors who sing. I teach ongoing private lessons as well as prep singers for auditions and performances, live or recorded. You might know me as that girl from the Kindle ads.
I starred in, co-wrote and recorded the songs that appeared in that whimsical, stop-motion campaign that launched the Amazon Kindle. I’ve also had a publishing deal as a songwriter, released an album and three EPs, and had several songs licensed for film, TV, and commercials.
In addition, I’ve guest starred on numerous hit TV shows, had a supporting role in an Academy Award-winning Best Picture film, and have appeared in over 50 national TV commercials as an actress and/or singer. I’m a huge advocate for cultivating a positive mindset, learning effective practice skills, and developing well-rounded musicianship skills. Most of all, I believe singing should be fun. If it’s not, come to see me and let’s find your joy again.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe we create our own luck and when it comes, we need to be ready for it. Whether we feel we got a lucky break or a bad hand, at the end of the day, it’s how we choose to respond to those experiences. What did I learn? How can this situation make me a better performer, teacher, mother, family member, or just a better human being? What can I be grateful for from this experience?
We must be there for ourselves. Never give up on yourself. Be on the journey and don’t worry what the outcome looks like. Just keep feeling good on the way there because that’s all we really have… right now. When we stay feeling good, good things happen.
Instead of worrying about your luck or someone else’s luck, spend time making those little positive choices that add up over time. If you want to be a good singer, practice every day. Move your body every day. Meditate to train your mind every day. It’s those seemingly little choices we make every single day that gets us ready for those moments of opportunity that come our way. That’s what luck looks like.
