Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Wong.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Angie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Back when I was in high school, I knew I always wanted to be a business owner/entrepreneur. I watched my parents start multiple businesses on their own, through all the ups and downs, making a decent living, raising me with a solid work ethic and integrity. I grew up loving sports and being active nearly all my life and when I graduated high school, I was not sure what direction to go but through playing soccer, I was inspired by my teammates who always complimented my massage skills. I figured it was a skill that I could have in handy throughout life since I also love getting massages and giving them. I knew I always wanted to be in service to others in a way that would make a difference in people’s lives.
Ironically by the time I graduated massage school, in 2002, I got involved in direct sales with a company called Vector marketing where I was selling high-end cutlery that then led me to be involved with real estate by the age of 21. This veered me off my massage track for a bit, until the economic crash in 2008. Massage became my staple, my saving grace so to speak and over a decade, in between luxury spas, high-end hotels, and various medical practices, I gathered enough feedback from clients that were fans of my work. I realized that I had a gift and had abandoned my dream of being my own boss. The one thing I innately knew I was talented at and could succeed at was massage all along. All the years I was working for others instead of being able to have my own freedom and desired income. I knew then what I had to do.
In September 2017, I opened up my practice and never looked back. It has been a true blessing and a space of endless opportunities that have opened up for me and the amazing clients I meet and serve. I have a solid practice with the freedom to create how I operate and conduct treatments (customizable to my client’s needs, with a dose of CBD). It is the foundation to which I am building innovation from and I am just getting started.
Has it been a smooth road?
Ironically, the struggles came more from my pursuit of real estate and not seeing my gift in front of me the whole time. That being said, I am so much more grateful for my journey because I value what I do now even more. It’s funny how some things are right there in my face and how the distractions and suggestions of others (my parents, in this case, to get into real estate) derailed me from my own inner knowledge.
However, I must say that since I opened my practice, it was not a walk in the park either. In fact, I did not realize that I was still carrying fear and a scarcity mindset when I still took two part-time positions to support my efforts on building my practice. I was pretty much making the money at those places to pay for my rent at my studio. One month of that and I finally cut my codependency lifeline and do what it takes to get in front of people who needed my services. I would go to the local gyms and set up my massage table offering free samples of my work. After all, I had no established clientele since past clients were from other practices and wanted to keep my integrity. I knew that all I had to do was put my hands on people at the gyms and they would want to set an appointment with me. I was right. I ran promotional campaigns to get as many people in my studio and built up my reviews on Yelp. It was a lot of physical work that I pushed through but it made me tougher and stronger, in more ways than one. It does get tricky being a solo owner/operator having to wear multiple hats from scheduling, performing the treatments, marketing, social media platforms and retailing CBD products. Though I trust that in due time, Myo Evolution will continue to expand and grow.
I am so humbled and grateful for the bumps and this journey that continues to unfold.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Myo Evolution – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Myo is the root word for muscle. Evolution is the process of change in a certain direction. In regards to the physical body, we are constantly evolving. For most of our lives, we are repeating movement patterns that suddenly disrupt our functionality in life as we know as physical pain. This may come from the form of an injury or past surgery, sports, poor posture, stress and other daily factors. I specialize in treating those symptoms and creating an elevated experience by incorporating a dose of CBD with each treatment. That is what sets me apart from others. Not just working with topical oils and creams, but both orally and topically which enhances healing and overall wellness.
The magic is not in the CBD, that is just complimentary. Though CBD is absolutely magical. Many of my clients will express their fascination with my technique. They ask me what it’s called. I was encouraged to create a name for such an application but basically it is a combination of trigger point therapy, acupressure, myofascial release and stretching. It is the connection I make with them energetically from the moment they walk in, my being with them, to the guided mediative music in the background, listening to their requests and intuitively feeling where they are blocked without them saying or knowing at times. It is in knowing how much pressure to apply when to pull back, how fast or slow to move through, and their breathing. It’s like a dance. We work together. That is what I am most proud of… the connections made through the space I create for trust and healing to emerge. That is the magic. The fact that my clients refer me as a healer not just a massage therapist. It is an honor and I am humbled to receive such acknowledgments.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the diversity of our city. The collective community, talents and gifts everyone brings. There is a flavor for everything here from the food, to the arts, careers, fashion and cultures. Our city provides a richness of self-expression and individualism. Owning who you are and being unique. A stand among the crowd. The activities are endless and applicable to most age ranges, backgrounds and social preferences. There is something for everyone. The inclusiveness versus exclusiveness, which is still sadly a part of the city I least like about here. There are still groups of people that are pretentious and judgmental here, which still is nearly everywhere. That is just life. However, I am blessed enough to not be around that energy and what motivates me to stay in the healing arts. I just remind myself to have compassion and understand that people are hurt and may have had harsh lives that I may not be aware of and why healing others is the perfect space for me to be neutral and compassionate.
This is why I do what I do and continue to do. I get to meet all walks of life and despite the least things I like about this city, I get to find understanding in it and be the change, starting with this very city.
