Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelo Vivo.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My name is Angelo Vivo, and I’m a singer, songwriter, dancer, and martial artist, originally from the Bay Area. With music being my biggest passion, I found my niche in the Pop, R&B, and Soul genres, with some of my influences being Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Usher, and John Legend. At the early stages of my music journey, I grooved and sang along to karaoke songs, which led to a rhythmic flow of singing in my church’s choir, starring in musicals, and writing and performing original songs.
A defining moment on my music journey came from competing in a music showcase. This was an amazing opportunity to combine my love for singing and dancing, and I thoroughly enjoyed creating choreography with my original music. The competition was held in San Francisco, and a notable music industry guest was Tunji Balogun, an A&R from Interscope Records at the time. After singing and dancing my heart out, and competing against other talented musical acts, I was declared the winner. I received an invitation to the Interscope headquarters in Santa Monica for a fruitful and insightful meeting with Tunji. This milestone proved to be a great, personal victory as an Asian American artist in the music industry.
Currently residing in LA, I’m continuing my vocal and dance training, and staying actively involved in communities such as LA Songwriters Collective, LMU Gospel Choir, Playground LA, and Share a Meal. I’m also continuing to write songs that are genuine and able to connect with all audiences. “Blessings” are what I call my fans as a reminder that each of them is valuable and has the ability to be a blessing and add value to others. Aware of how influential the entertainment business can be, I strive to make a positive impact around the world on a universal platform, on a universal scale, mainly through music. I hope to share my talents and music with the world in order to heal and inspire, and I desire to create songs that remind people how powerful music can be.
Please tell us about your music.
I sing and write songs that are genuine and able to connect with audiences of all ages. My songs are usually inspired by personal events and stories, as well as imagined situations that I feel listeners would identify with on an authentic level. My songwriting process usually consists of creating a melody, thinking of a concept, then adding lyrics and vocal layers. “Epitome of Beauty” is a song I wrote for my upcoming EP, which adapted this process. I wanted the melodies and harmonies to complement the song’s bold lyrics, reinforcing the fact that every person is beautiful enough, strong enough, brave enough, and more than enough. I hope listeners feel a sense of power and encouragement while listening to my songs and then apply that empowerment in their own lives to chase after their goals and dreams.
As I continue to develop, grow, and mature as an artist, I’m becoming more and more aware that sharing my gifts and talents is less about me and more about my community. I make it a point to create songs with a message, and songs that inspire, encourage, and heal in any way possible. I’m so excited and thankful to be part of a wave of Asian American artists who are creating a lane in the mainstream music and entertainment industries, showing the coming generations what is possible.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
You are not alone, and that’s the truth! Your uniqueness may set you apart from the crowd, but that’s what makes you so valuable. Embrace who you are and the gifts and talents you’ve been blessed with; the world needs your creativity, and your art can inspire other artists in ways you wouldn’t even know were possible. Find local communities and groups with artists who meet up monthly, or even weekly, and be consistent with attending these meetups. When you show up and connect with others consistently, you’ll build a strong sense of belonging and make life-long friends along the way.
When I first moved to LA, I didn’t have a music community or “tribe” that I belonged to; nevertheless, a friend told me about an awesome group called Los Angeles Songwriters Collective, and I’ve been actively involved with that community since being introduced to them in 2018. This group is like a musical family that all creatives have longed for in LA!
Connecting with artists may seem daunting at first, especially if you’re an introvert like me. Still, once you become comfortable in uncomfortable circumstances that will help you grow and develop, you’ll find that it’s all worth it!
